China's Foreign Ministry has denied claims in Western media that it is considering participating in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, the Global Times reported on March 24.

German news agency Die Welt on March 22 quoted unnamed diplomatic sources as saying that Beijing is considering joining a peacekeeping force as part of a European-led "coalition of the ready" to ensure a potential ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

“Once China joins the coalition, it could increase the chances of Russia accepting a peacekeeping force in Ukraine,” an EU diplomatic source told Die Welt.

Speaking at a press conference, when asked about this information, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun affirmed that the above statements were completely false.

Mr. Guo reiterated that China's stance on the Ukraine crisis remains consistent and clear.

Officially, China denies providing military assistance to either side and stresses the need for a peaceful solution in Ukraine.

The peacekeeping mission, led by Britain and France, aims to ensure Ukraine's security in the event of a ceasefire by deploying foreign troops on the ground, as well as providing air and naval support.

Details of the mission remain unclear as discussions within the “coalition of the willing” continue. The discussions come as US President Donald Trump pushes for a ceasefire in Ukraine, while rejecting direct US involvement in a European-led mission that would likely provide logistical support.

China has been Russia’s top economic partner in recent years. Cooperation with China and other partners has helped Russia stand firm despite more than 28,000 sanctions from the West.

Moscow has repeatedly rejected the idea of having European or NATO troops in Ukraine, warning of consequences if this scenario were to happen.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that the presence of NATO troops under any flag and in any capacity on the territory of Ukraine is a threat to Russia. According to him, Moscow will not accept this under any circumstances.
