Medium and large enterprises need to truly become the driving force of the economy.

DNVN - Speaking at a working session between the Government Standing Committee and large enterprises to discuss solutions to contribute to the country's socio-economic development on the morning of September 21, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung said that the team of medium and large enterprises has not really become the leading force of the economy as expected.

Minister Nguyen Chi Dung emphasized that enterprises and entrepreneurs always play a key role and are the main material production force of the economy. Vietnam has more than 930 thousand active enterprises, of which 98% are small and medium enterprises, about 14.4 thousand cooperatives and more than 5 million business households.

In 2023, the private economic sector will contribute about 46% of GDP. This sector will generate about 30% of the State budget revenue and attract 85% of the workforce.

Among them, a large private enterprise force has emerged, accumulating sufficient capacity in terms of capital scale, technology level and corporate governance, having brands in the regional and world markets, becoming important driving forces of the economy such as Vingroup, Thaco, Hoa Phat...

Minister Nguyen Chi Dung spoke at the meeting.

However, the business community in general still faces many difficulties and challenges. Large enterprises still face many barriers and limitations; they have not yet fully exploited their potential and have not yet fulfilled their pioneering and leading roles as expected.

“Although a group of medium and large enterprises has emerged, they have not really become the leading force of the economy as expected. The proportion of investment in leading and motivating industries and fields, especially in new fields such as clean energy production, chips, microcircuits, semiconductors, hydrogen... is still low.

There are no large-scale projects to create breakthrough momentum, spillover effects, support restructuring and enhance the competitiveness of the economy," Mr. Dung emphasized.

According to Mr. Dung, the development process of our country's business community is still young compared to other countries in the region and the world, and has not yet accumulated much capital, knowledge, technology, experience, and business traditions. The scale of enterprises in the economy is mostly small and medium, without original technology, and lacking the potential to digitize and green business activities. The proportion of enterprises participating in the manufacturing and processing sector is still limited.

The operations of large enterprises are still relatively independent, and the connectivity, spread, and leadership are not clearly demonstrated when the proportion of small and medium-sized enterprises participating in the supply chains of large domestic and FDI enterprises is still low.

“We are at a very important time when the world is witnessing many major changes, the emergence of new industries, changes in policies of major economies leading to shifts in investment flows, and adjustments in the structure of trade and investment. This poses risks and challenges, but at the same time brings new opportunities and fortunes to countries,” said Mr. Dung.

Accordingly, the new context is posing new requirements for the country's development orientation. Vietnam is not only striving to achieve growth targets but also green and sustainable growth. Vietnam must focus on attracting investment and creating breakthroughs for pioneering industries; relying on science - technology and innovation.
