(Dan Tri) - Goalkeeper Dinh Trieu of the Vietnamese national team is celebrating a simple, warm Tet with his family after a successful year of competition.

Returning home on the 26th of Tet, goalkeeper Dinh Trieu is enjoying a warm and cozy moment with his family. The house, which is usually quiet, is bustling with laughter in the early days of spring.

Taking off his competition clothes, the young man from Thai Binh becomes a simple husband with his wife and daughter.

Sharing with Dan Tri reporter, Dinh Trieu said that after returning home after winning the 2024 ASEAN Cup championship, he and his family still celebrated Tet as simply as many years ago.

"This year, my husband and I all went back to our hometown to celebrate Tet, so the whole family was warmer. The children and grandchildren gathered around the pot of banh chung until midnight. This was the first time I learned and wrapped banh chung myself. In previous years, because we didn't have enough people, my mother and I asked my uncle to wrap 3 banh chung to offer on the altar," said Dinh Trieu.

Since his good performance in the ASEAN Cup, the goalkeeper of the Vietnamese national team has become well-known. Every time he goes out, goes to the market or eats, fans recognize him and ask to take pictures with him. At first, Dinh Trieu was a bit shy, but gradually he got used to the love of the audience for him.

Tuong Linh - Dinh Trieu's wife - is from Dong Nai, more than 1,500km away from her husband's house. This year, the Vietnamese national team goalkeeper's small family did not return to his mother's house because he had to join the Hai Phong club early on the evening of the third day of Tet.

2024 marks an important turning point in Dinh Trieu's career. The young man from Thai Binh was named by coach Kim Sang Sik to the Vietnam national team's training list for the Southeast Asian Football Championship.

"Playing for the national team is the dream and honor of all athletes, not just football players.

For many years, I only knew how to practice hard and show my best ability. When the coaching staff found the tactics suitable and called me up to the national team, it was truly a great joy," Dinh Trieu confided.

Having achieved success and become well-known today, the goalkeeper born in 1991 still clearly remembers the chance to meet coach Nguyen Minh Phuong in 2017.

At that time, Dinh Trieu decided to retire from football due to family circumstances and not finding the opportunity to play professional football. Putting aside his passion for football, he worked as a security guard for a company in Vung Tau.

"I wanted to pursue professional football, but there were times when I had to accept returning to the reality of life to help my family. When I met some teammates of the same age and saw them compete, I really wanted to return to the field," Dinh Trieu confided.

In 2017, Dinh Trieu became a student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport. During this time, he participated in amateur football tournaments. That was also the opportunity for this young man to meet coach Nguyen Minh Phuong of Binh Phuoc Club.

Before becoming a coach, Nguyen Minh Phuong was a famous player of the Vietnamese team, winning the Southeast Asian championship in 2008 with Phan Thanh Binh and Le Cong Vinh.

At that time, Coach Minh Phuong was looking for a goalkeeper for Binh Phuoc Club. Encouraged by many people, Dinh Trieu tried his hand with the hope of returning to professional football.

After playing in Binh Phuoc for 1 year, he joined Hai Phong Club and has been there until now, because he wants to be close to his mother. He wants to spend time visiting home and taking care of his mother because she is 70 years old.

"Meeting Mr. Minh Phuong was a chance in my football career. In 2008, he won the Southeast Asian championship with the Vietnamese team, that was also the time I went to Hanoi to practice football. If I hadn't met coach Minh Phuong, I don't know if I would have had the opportunity to play professionally now," Dinh Trieu confided.

After a short Tet holiday with his family, Dinh Trieu will join Hai Phong Club to prepare for the next rounds of V.League.

Sending New Year wishes to fans, Dinh Trieu hopes that the audience will always stand by and support the players no matter what the match results are.

"I wish the fans a prosperous new year. In the new year, my teammates and I will work hard to practice and compete to bring back good results. Football has its ups and downs, but I hope the audience will not turn their backs, always accompany and love the players," Dinh Trieu confided.
