No special offers in Vietnam U.22 team
Tran Trung Kien's AFF Cup 2024 championship is an encouragement for the young goalkeeper currently playing for HAGL. However, from being named in the Southeast Asian championship list for the national team, to winning an official position at the 33rd SEA Games, are two completely different things.
There are no "special" spots for Vietnamese players in the national teams under coach Kim Sang-sik.
In fact, in the 2024 AFF Cup, Tran Trung Kien is the only player in the Vietnamese team who has not played a single minute, while 25/26 other players have at least played once in the Southeast Asian championship. Previously, coach Kim Sang-sik has not used goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien in any official matches or matches within the framework of FIFA Days, which are matches recognized by FIFA. Coach Kim Sang-sik called Tran Trung Kien to join the Vietnam national team and included him in the AFF Cup 2024, mainly as a backup plan, considering the future. At the same time, this is a way to help the HAGL club goalkeeper gain more experience at the national team level, giving Tran Trung Kien the opportunity to practice with senior goalkeepers.
Through training sessions like this, Tran Trung Kien will improve, if he has the will to learn and continue to strive in domestic tournaments in the coming time. However, Tran Trung Kien winning the AFF Cup is not a guarantee for an official spot in the 33rd SEA Games in 2025, in the U.22 Vietnam team.
High competition in the goalkeeper position
In addition, at the age of 22, Vietnamese football now has a number of good goalkeepers, such as Cao Van Binh (SLNA, 20 years old) and Doan Huy Hoang (Bac Ninh, 22 years old), so the competition between these goalkeepers and Tran Trung Kien will be very tense. Cao Van Binh and Doan Huy Hoang were known before Tran Trung Kien. The goalkeepers of SLNA and Bac Ninh clubs participated in the final round of the U.23 Asian Cup last year.
Nguyen Dinh Trieu unexpectedly surpassed Nguyen Filip in the number 1 position in the Vietnamese team's goal at the AFF Cup 2024.
The important thing for young goalkeepers in the coming time is that they get a place to play for their club, and at the same time show stable performance in domestic tournaments (V-League, first division), not their name.
Remember the case of goalkeeper Nguyen Dinh Trieu at the AFF Cup 2024, before the Southeast Asian championship took place, most experts and domestic fans believed that Nguyen Filip was the number 1 choice of the Vietnamese team. However, goalkeeper Nguyen Dinh Trieu unexpectedly played in important matches in the group stage, before taking the official position from the knockout round (2 semi-final matches, final), then won the position of best goalkeeper of the AFF Cup 2024.
That shows that, for coach Kim Sang-sik, the performance of each player is more important to him than the reputation of this player. The Korean coach can discover the strengths of each player that ordinary people cannot see, before helping the players maximize their strengths.
Therefore, goalkeepers who are less famous than goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien are not necessarily out of the chance to take the number 1 position in the goal of the U.22 Vietnam team before the 33rd SEA Games. On the contrary, goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien is not sure to be the number 1 choice of the U.22 Vietnam team. Everything is still ahead, goalkeepers in the 22-year-old age group of Vietnamese football will compete fairly, starting together from now until the Southeast Asian Games begins.
