New developments in tension in the Gaza Strip as one country steps in to "save" the situation

On March 24, Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip killed more than 60 Palestinians, including women and children, according to the Gaza Health Authority.

This is an escalation of tensions after Israel broke a ceasefire with Hamas with a surprise bombing last week.

Meanwhile, officials say Egypt has put forward a new proposal to try to get the Gaza ceasefire back on track.

Hamas will release five hostages, including an American-Israeli, in exchange for Israel allowing humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip and halting fighting for weeks, an Egyptian official said on March 24. Israel will also release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

A Hamas official said the group had “responded positively” to the proposal, but did not elaborate. Israel has yet to respond.

The Egyptian proposal also includes a roadmap for the release of all hostages in exchange for a complete Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, with US guarantees, sources said.

Hamas accused Israel of violating the terms of a previous ceasefire deal but said it was still ready to negotiate a ceasefire and was studying proposals from US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff.
