On October 17, Tam Tri Da Nang General Hospital announced that it had successfully performed surgery to remove a uterine fibroid weighing up to 5kg from a female patient. This was the largest fibroid ever recorded at the hospital.
Since 2021, Ms. LTD (49 years old, living in Da Nang City) discovered a uterine fibroid with symptoms of pain and compression but not severe so she did not have regular check-ups.
Over the past year, Mrs. D's belly has protruded as if she was pregnant, and the tumor has grown rapidly. Her body is thin and pale. In particular, because of abdominal pain, frequent urination, and constipation, the patient came to Tam Tri Da Nang General Hospital for examination.
Abdominal ultrasound and CT scan results showed a uterine fibroid measuring 28x22x16cm, compressing the bladder and rectum.
Dr. Nguyen Cao Quy, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology - Tam Tri Da Nang General Hospital said that in this case, the tumor was too large, occupying the entire abdomen from the lower abdomen up to the two ribs like a full-term pregnancy, so the doctors consulted and decided to perform open surgery to remove the entire uterus, leaving 2 adnexa. In addition, the patient had anemia and was transfused with 2 units of packed red blood cells 350ml before surgery and 1 unit of red blood cells during surgery.
After nearly 2 hours, the surgical team completely removed the 5kg tumor.
After surgery, the patient's health is stable. The body is lighter and can do normal activities.
