Hanoi's 10th grade entrance exam in 2025 will increase practical elements

Regarding the literature subject, many teachers commented that the biggest change is that the 10th grade entrance exam sample focuses on testing and evaluating students' abilities, specifically reading and writing abilities. Notably, the reading section uses materials from texts outside of textbooks, allowing students to evaluate their reading abilities according to each type of text, avoiding memorization and rote learning...

Hanoi's 10th grade entrance exam from 2025 will change towards assessing learners' abilities and increasing practical application.

Regarding this major change, Ms. Pham Thai Le, a literature teacher at Marie Curie Secondary and High School (Hanoi), suggested that when selecting materials not in the textbooks for the exam, meaning that it is the first time students have access to them, the requirements for answers and marking instructions must also change.

According to Ms. Le, it is unreasonable to require students to do all the ideas in the exam time as provided by the test maker. Not to mention that each person will feel differently about the work. Even a person at different times will feel differently about the same work. Therefore, there cannot be only one correct answer. Moreover, analyzing a literary work is not, and should not be, the main goal of teaching and learning literature.

For a literary essay, if the answer has 5 ideas and the student can do 2 ideas, the maximum score will be given (from the content score of that question). The student is not required to do all the ideas given by the teacher to get the maximum score.

The writing part of both types of essays focuses on word usage, sentence structure, argumentation, text organization, and idea arrangement (depending on the requirements of the grade level and class). That is, it focuses on assessing expressive ability, the goal of teaching and learning literature in schools.

Commenting on the math exam, Mr. Nguyen Manh Cuong, a math teacher at Hoc Mai Education System, said: The structure of the illustrative exam reflects the requirements for assessing learners' abilities according to the orientation of the 2018 General Education Program, with a reduction in calculation requirements and an increase in practical elements.

Specifically, the structured math subject is quite similar to the previous years' exam with 5 major problems, each consisting of many small ideas arranged in order from easy to difficult, the exam time is 120 minutes. The exam content has a reasonable enhancement of some factors related to practical applications.

The knowledge content in the exam includes 3 knowledge streams: numbers and algebra, geometry and measurement, statistics and probability, closely following the 2018 General Education Program. Of which, the number and algebra knowledge stream still accounts for the largest proportion (4.5 points/10 points). The increase in questions related to practical applications aims to test students' reading comprehension and mathematical modeling ability; thereby classifying candidates.

Based on the structure, content and scope of knowledge of the exam, Mr. Cuong believes that students need to build for themselves a scientific study and review strategy to have the best preparation for the 10th grade entrance exam.

The exam for natural sciences, a subject that may "appear" for the first time in Hanoi's 10th grade entrance exam from 2025, was also commented by teachers of the Hoc Mai Education System through the sample exam: "Focusing on the practical application of the subject, there are no complex calculation questions, no high-level application questions. Therefore, students need to understand the nature of the theory and apply the theory to practice, avoid rote learning, and at the same time build a suitable study and review roadmap.

Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, a natural science teacher at Chuong Duong Secondary School (Hoan Kiem District), stated that the practicality of the exam questions was demonstrated by mentioning many objects, materials, even familiar forces in life, or questions about the actual height and shadow of a tree in the school yard...

Similarly, the illustration test for history and geography is also an integrated subject according to the 2018 General Education Program, which is included for the first time in the 10th grade entrance exams in Hanoi. The illustration test that the Hanoi Department of Education and Training shows has 40 questions corresponding to 34 questions and is divided into 2 parts corresponding to 2 types of questions: multiple choice and true/false.

In addition to the familiar multiple choice question format, the inclusion of true or false multiple choice questions or questions using original materials in the exam represents a new point in the way of making questions to gradually approach the orientation of assessing capacity in accordance with the goals and requirements for developing learners' capacity and qualities.

The Hanoi Department of Education and Training has only announced 7 sample questions for 7 subjects for the 10th grade entrance exam from 2025, but has not yet stated how many subjects out of those 7 subjects will be tested in this exam; which will be compulsory subjects, which will be optional subjects, and how the selection will be done.

Schools and teachers said that having sample questions available early in the new school year is very convenient for teachers and students. The school's tests will closely follow the sample question structure, helping students grasp the knowledge and have appropriate test-taking methods, preparing well for this especially important exam.
