Physical education and sports training in schools is a favorable environment for students to discover and nurture their talents early, thereby helping them pursue their passion and creating conditions to find resources to train professional athletes for the country's sports.

Environment to nurture young talent
Having just been built, Nguyen Van Thoai High School has soon become an ideal physical education and sports environment for students. There is a well-invested sports area dedicated to training. Thanks to that, the school's sports movement has developed quite strongly in recent times, especially volleyball, athletics, badminton, swimming, etc. In particular, with a modern multi-purpose field, last school year, the school successfully hosted the volleyball event of the Da Nang City Student Sports Tournament for the 2022-2023 school year. Also at this tournament, with good performance and individual efforts, the school's women's volleyball team won second prize.
Sharing about the learning environment here, Bui Thi Thao Quyen, class 12/4, main striker of the female volleyball team of Nguyen Van Thoai High School said: “I started to love volleyball since grade 7. However, when I entered Nguyen Van Thoai High School, the teachers trained me in competition skills, especially adjusting my mentality and building confidence in each match. Volleyball not only brings me health but also helps me reduce stress after school. I have been accepted to university but will continue to pursue this sport.”
In addition to the high prizes in volleyball, last school year, the school also won many awards in other subjects such as: Second prize for the high school group in the 25th and 26th Da Nang Newspaper Traditional Armed Forces Cross-Country Race, Bronze medal in women's basketball at the City Student Sports Competition for the 2022-2023 school year, Bronze medal in women's soccer at the City Phu Dong Sports Festival for the 2020-2021 school year, Silver medal in the 4x50m freestyle relay for both men and women at the National High School Sports Competition...
To achieve this high achievement, Mr. Dang Hung Thuong, Principal of Nguyen Van Thoai High School, said that from grade 10, the school has reviewed students with sports achievements at the junior high school level and then invested in training. After organizing the annual Phu Dong Sports Festival at the school level, students with excellent achievements will be selected for further training every Thursday and Sunday at the school's sports area. The school currently has a multi-purpose gymnasium that is convenient for practicing competitions, a football field, an athletics track and is equipped with training tools such as horizontal bars, parallel bars, and aerobic mats.
“In order to create a playground for students to practice, in addition to implementing the teaching of 4 subjects on basketball, volleyball, badminton, and soccer in the curriculum, the school has established a soccer club for students to practice according to the model of a school sports club with about 60 students participating. It is expected that in the near future, the school will open more clubs to help students have the opportunity to participate in activities and practice after school hours in addition to the main subject of physical education,” added Mr. Nguyen Quang Quoc Cong, Deputy Head of Physical Education and National Defense Education.
In the 2022-2023 school year, Nguyen Van Thoai High School will allow students to choose physical education and sports subjects, thereby promoting students' passion and reducing boredom. Interspersed with the learning process, teachers also incorporate competition content to help students increase their excitement as well as hone their skills and techniques in the elective subject. In order to meet the needs of teaching and learning swimming in the school, in the near future, the school plans to invest in building a standard swimming pool. Therefore, the school recommends that the Department of Education and Training soon implement this to help students in the south of the city access swimming to limit drowning.
Investing in facilities to meet teaching requirements
Compared to schools in the suburbs, schools in the city center often face difficulties in physical training facilities due to lack of playgrounds. However, Phan Chau Trinh High School has always been at the forefront of physical education and school sports movements in the city for many years.
Sharing about the school's physical education and sports movement, Mr. Le Phuoc Binh, Vice Principal of Phan Chau Trinh High School, said that the school's sports strengths are badminton, table tennis, swimming, volleyball, and basketball, which are invested in by parents because they are suitable for the general development of society. Meanwhile, subjects such as long jump, athletics, etc. are less popular with students because the number of students in the school is very large, the training grounds do not meet the requirements, especially at this age, jogging in the morning will cause a feeling of lethargy and fatigue, affecting their studies.
Currently, the physical education program has a short duration, only 2 periods/week, so most students choose simple, light, and sedentary physical education subjects. “To develop the sports movement in schools and increase the students’ practice time, the school has established basketball, volleyball, table tennis, and badminton clubs. In addition, at the beginning of the year, the school established a team to train students to participate in competitions held in December.
Thanks to that, the school has always achieved many high achievements of the city and the country such as winning 3 gold medals, 6 silver medals and 2 bronze medals in swimming at the National High School Sports Competition in 2023; 16 gold medals, 8 silver medals, 8 bronze medals in swimming and many gold and silver medals in athletics, table tennis, chess, basketball at the City Student Sports Competition in the 2022-2023 school year. However, with more than 3,800 students in 93 classes, Phan Chau Trinh High School still faces difficulties in facilities for training. Currently, the school only has one swimming pool, so it needs to invest more so that students have the opportunity to practice, develop their talents and strengths," Mr. Le Phuoc Binh suggested.
Concerned about the lack of facilities, Mr. Huynh Trong Hieu, Head of the Physical Education Department at Trung Vuong Secondary School, said that due to the large number of students and the small area of the school, the school has difficulty in training. Currently, the school lacks a playground for training in subjects such as football and swimming. To teach according to the 2018 reform program of the Ministry of Education and Training, the school's swimming pool and football field are still not enough.
Faced with such a difficult situation, in the 2022-2023 school year, to create conditions to improve the quality of teaching and learning of physical education subjects, the school mobilized funds from the budget and support from parents to rent training grounds for students. In addition, the school organized timely commendation and rewards for students who won high-level prizes at the district and city levels.
Thanks to that, in the 2022-2023 school year, the school won 17 city-level prizes and 30 district-level prizes. Notably, 4 students won national swimming prizes, including 1 gold medal, 3 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals. With the attention of parents and the school, students with sports talents are always discovered and nurtured promptly, so that the school is truly a place to nurture talents, contributing to training future athletes for the city's and the country's sports industry.
