Swimming lessons are a necessary need to ensure children have basic skills in the water environment, to serve the needs of children and parents. In recent years, in My Tho City, there are many swimming pools invested by private individuals, with many teaching services and guidance on necessary knowledge when participating in swimming.

In addition, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism coordinates with the Department of Education and Training to strengthen propaganda and education on skills to prevent drowning and injuries for children and adolescents; coordinates the organization of survival skills training as well as equipping knowledge on swimming safety; instructs on first aid and emergency care in case of drowning; opens free swimming classes, equips basic swimming skills for children and adolescents in difficult circumstances, etc.

Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Thi Kim Chi said that the Department has implemented a program to popularize swimming lessons to equip knowledge and water safety skills to minimize the drowning rate among children and students in the province.

At the same time, issue documents guiding the popular swimming lessons for students, encourage schools and educational institutions in the province to promote social investment in swimming pools in schools. Schools with conditions organize swimming lessons combined with teaching water safety skills to students in appropriate forms and have policies to support, encourage and motivate students to actively participate in swimming lessons, contributing to preventing drowning accidents.

With the attention to investing in facilities, building standard swimming pools, and establishing many swimming clubs in the province, many children, students, and teenagers have been attracted to participate in training. The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has a plan to organize swimming literacy classes for children, swimming instructor classes, and drowning prevention. In districts, towns, and cities, plans are also being made to organize swimming literacy classes for children.

Ms. Vo Thi Yen (Ward 6, My Tho City) has an 8-year-old daughter who is learning to swim at a swimming pool in My Tho City. She shared: “Seeing the current risk of drowning in young children, my family is very interested in sending our children to swimming lessons. At first, I was also hesitant to let my child learn to swim, because I was afraid that she would be afraid of water or that her health would not be able to withstand being in a water environment.

But after a few weeks of swimming practice, the child got used to it and really enjoyed learning to swim, his health was also guaranteed, especially he was quite confident when going into the pool, swimming with his friends. This not only helps the child practice health, satisfy his interests, but also makes me feel secure when the children are equipped with swimming skills, learn first aid when they or their friends have an accident while swimming or in the water environment".

Tran Khoa Nguyen (12 years old, in Ward 6, My Tho City) said: “I just signed up for swimming classes a few months ago. Right from the first days of swimming lessons, I was instructed on warm-up movements before getting into the water to prevent cramps, and how to breathe properly underwater to avoid choking. Now I know how to swim and am very confident when exposed to water.”

In the coming time, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism will actively coordinate with localities to promote public awareness of the benefits of swimming, especially encouraging children to actively participate in swimming lessons to prevent drowning and improve their health. At the same time, promote the role and responsibility of families, schools, all levels, sectors, organizations and society in the work of preventing and combating child drowning.

With the participation of the Party Committee, the government, relevant departments, agencies and sectors, along with favorable conditions in terms of infrastructure and human resources, the movement of teaching and learning to swim has been promoted; equipping children with skills to prevent and combat drowning. Thereby helping to reduce the tragic drowning situation in children, contributing to creating a safe living environment for children.
