DNVN - Fortinet and shipbuilding company Samsung Heavy Industries recently signed a memorandum of understanding in Korea, marking a strategic joint cooperation in the field of maritime cybersecurity.

In April 2022, the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) required the application of UR E26 and E27 standards to protect maritime vehicles from both internal and external cyber threats and ensure the safety of ship operations in the context of increasing cyber threats such as illegal intrusion and extortion against ships.

The UR E26 standard aims to ensure the safe integration of operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) equipment into the network during the design, construction, commissioning and operation of a ship. The UR E27 standard aims to ensure that the entire system is jointly secured and enhanced by third-party equipment suppliers. These standards will become mandatory for new ships from 1 July 2024.

Within the framework of this agreement, in addition to cooperating to enhance cybersecurity to comply with new IACS security regulations, the two parties also wish to expand the cybersecurity market and expand the application of advanced security technologies in the maritime sector, such as network segmentation and OT protocol-based security services, remote monitoring and control of ships, from land, as well as with autonomous ships.

Fortinet plans to focus on designing maritime-specific cybersecurity solutions based on Fortinet’s core suite of solutions, with a focus on optimizing the solutions to operate most effectively in the unique maritime environment. This will support enhanced OT security for Samsung Heavy Industries’ vessels, ensuring full compliance with the new mandatory requirements of the UR E26 and E27 standards.

With the advantage of owning an OT security platform that extends from the Security Fabric enterprise security platform, Fortinet can provide solutions and services to protect operational technology in the “Purdue” model, from sensors to the cloud, ensuring network and asset visibility, network segmentation, endpoint protection, zero-trust authentication and access management, threat detection and defense technologies, as well as operating SOC/NOC security operations centers.

Building on its OT security expertise and position as a leading global security solutions provider, Fortinet will help ensure cybersecurity on new ships and shipboard equipment built by Samsung Heavy Industries.

“As issues related to the network infrastructure of maritime vehicles continue to increase, cybersecurity has become an important factor that requires special attention during the design and operation of ships,” said Jongung Choi, Director of the Autonomous Ship Research Center at Samsung Heavy Industries. “Through close collaboration with Fortinet, a global leader in OT security, Samsung Heavy Industries is confident in strengthening its cybersecurity leadership in the shipbuilding industry by establishing an advanced, innovative system for OT security during shipbuilding and increasing the resilience and control of ship cybersecurity.”

Mr. Michael Murphy - Director of Operational Technology and Critical Infrastructure Solutions, Fortinet Asia Pacific added: "Building on this partnership, we will promote comprehensive support between the two parties on a global scale in the field of maritime cybersecurity. Fortinet is committed to actively supporting Samsung Heavy Industries in ensuring the safety of the technical platform to comply with the new security regulations of IACS, while aiming for the goal of digital innovation, creating technological breakthroughs to expand the business in the field of maritime security."
