General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping at the opening session of the third session of the 14th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference on March 4, 2025
Among these new disadvantages for China is the new round of trade conflicts that US President Donald Trump has triggered against China. That is the intention of the new US administration to push China's political and economic role and influence out of Panama, to divide Russia from China, and most recently, the US's intention to directly and indirectly target China's shipbuilding industry to protect this US industry. All of these moves signal that the relationship between the US and China will be more turbulent than before, rather than peaceful in Mr. Trump's second term as president.
There is a very clear contrast between the views and policies of Mr. Trump and his associates towards Russia and China, which the new US administration is likely to openly express. The level of friendliness of the US towards Russia contrasts with the level of hostility towards China. The US actively moves closer to Russia while widening the gap with China.
It is unclear what happened later, but in the early stages of his current presidency, Mr. Trump seemed to prioritize foreign policy not dealing with China in general and triggering a new round of trade conflicts with China in particular, but rather adjusting his policy toward Russia to reshape the US relationship with Russia. This also aimed to find consensus with Russia on a political solution to end the war in Ukraine.
