Female director Justine Triet makes history

Thus, Justine Triet became the third woman to have a film win the highest award in Cannes history, after Jane Campion ("The Piano", 1993) and Julia Ducournau ("Titane", 2021).

The film tells the story of a novelist (Sandra Hüller) accused of murdering her husband. Their blind son is the only witness to the crime.

In his review, The Hollywood Reporter writer Jon Frosch called "Anatomy of a Fall" "a gripping and emotionally charged drama" and lead actress Hüller's performance "sensational".

According to The Guardian, 86-year-old actress Janes Fonda presented the award to Triet. She shared: "The first time I came here was in 1963, the film festival was smaller then. There were no female directors competing at that time. We filmmakers have come a long way, but there is still a long way to go."

In her acceptance speech, the French director thanked the film crew. Triet also criticized the government's commercialization of culture, targeting cultural and artistic priorities that were once part of the national heritage.

Tran Anh Hung won the Best Director award.

The 75th Cannes Film Festival also witnessed the victory of director Tran Anh Hung with the work "La passion de dodin bouffant". He was awarded the Best Director award.

This is the first time he has had a film selected to compete for the Palme d'Or, after four times bringing films to Cannes.

Receiving the prestigious award, director Tran Anh Hung thanked many people, including his wife, actress and production designer Tran Nu Yen Khe, for being an indispensable "chef" in his career.

"La passion de dodin bouffant" is set in 1885 France, revolving around the 20-year relationship between chef Eugénie (Juliette Binoche) and culinary expert Dodin (Benoît Magimel). Together, they create dishes that make many famous chefs in the world wary.

Throughout their shared passion for food, Eugénie and Dodin gradually found a common soul. However, Eugénie longed for freedom and never wanted to marry Dodin.

After its premiere on May 24, "La passion de dodin bouffant" received a 7-minute round of applause and many compliments from the international press.

Deadline commented that the film has a unique way of telling a story, successfully honoring the senses in the culinary experience. The Guardian praised the film for its many beautiful scenes, exuding charm and sophistication. The Hollywood Reporter also highly appreciated the acting of the main actors.

The only Vietnamese film to win the Golden Camera award

In addition to Tran Anh Hung, "Inside the yellow cocoon shell" - the only Vietnamese film shown at the Cannes Film Festival this year - also achieved success when it won the Camera d'Or award.

On stage receiving the award, director Pham Thien An thanked the organizers, judges and those who loved his film.

"I also want to thank my family and my wife, who have supported me throughout my journey of making the film. I want to thank the members of the production crew as well as the actors involved in the film.

We have come a long way to get here and cinema is the faith that binds us together. This award is for everyone," the director confided.

When it was screened on May 24 as part of the Directors' Fortnight, the film received a five-minute standing ovation.

Western film critics have given the film a lot of praise for its filmmaking techniques and the themes that Pham Thien An touches on through each frame.

"Inside the Golden Cocoon" tells the story of Thien, a man who has to carry his sister-in-law's body back to his hometown after she died in a car accident. On the journey, Thien has to bring Dao, his nephew, back to his hometown. The trip has raised many thoughts in Thien about the meaning of life and faith.
