Highlights of Vietnamese sports
The lack of success of Vietnamese sports in major international competitions, especially the empty-handedness at the Paris Olympics, made the vote for the title of outstanding national athlete and coach in 2024 quite quiet yesterday. As the Vietnamese athlete with the most positive performance at the Paris Olympics when reaching the finals of two events, the women's 10m air pistol and the 25m sports pistol, Trinh Thu Vinh achieved the highest score in the vote, becoming the outstanding athlete of Vietnamese sports in 2024.

At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Trinh Thu Vinh participated for the first time but showed her talent and strong character. The Thanh Hoa native had accurate shots and competed fiercely in the finals but narrowly missed the medal in the 10m pistol event (finishing fourth) and ranked 7th overall in the 25m sport pistol event. In addition, in 2024, this 24-year-old talent also won the Asian shooting gold medal, affirming her talent in the domestic arena, deserving the title of outstanding Vietnamese sports athlete.
From athletics to… shooting
Trinh Thu Vinh is from Thach Thanh (Thanh Hoa), and had a difficult childhood. After school, she had to go to the fields to herd buffaloes and take care of crops to help her family. When she was in middle school, Trinh Thu Vinh participated in the provincial athletics competition and caught the attention of the coaches. However, after a period of training, she was unable to make a breakthrough, partly because of a knee injury. The coaches realized that this female athlete had the potential for shooting, so they guided her to try this sport. And when she switched to shooting, Thu Vinh was like "a fish in water". She improved quickly, continuously achieved achievements, and was called up to the national team to compete internationally.
However, it took nearly 5 years for Thu Vinh to make her mark with an individual bronze medal and a team silver medal at the 31st SEA Games in 2022. She affirmed her talent with a double gold medal at the 2022 National Sports Festival and reached the continental arena with 3 Asian gold medals in 2022. With steady progress, in August 2023, the golden girl of Vietnamese shooting entered the top 5 of the world championship, thereby winning a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Towards the 2028 Olympics
Immediately after missing out on a medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Trinh Thu Vinh expressed her determination to make a strong comeback at the 2028 Olympics in the US. "I will strive to improve my technique, hone my mentality, and strengthen my courage with the goal of returning to the 2028 Olympics. I wish to see the national flag raised again at the Olympics," Trinh Thu Vinh expressed.
Coaches said that this female shooter has a lot of potential and needs more investment to improve, aiming for international competitions, focusing on the 2028 Olympics. Thu Vinh's strengths are her eagerness to learn and progress. Mr. Dang Ha Viet, Director of the Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Department, said that the title of Outstanding Athlete is important to athletes, not only showing the recognition and evaluation of the sports industry but also of the whole society for the athletes' efforts, thereby helping them to be more confident and continue to have the motivation to strive to conquer new heights.
Le Van Cong is an excellent disabled athlete.
Following Trinh Thu Vinh in the category of outstanding athletes are Tran Quyet Chien (billiards), Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen (volleyball), Nguyen Thi Huong (canoeing), Pham Thi Hue (rowing), Nguyen Thuy Linh (badminton), Nguyen Thi That (cycling), Ha Thi Linh (boxing), Tran Thi Nhi Yen (athletics), Do Thi Anh Nguyet (archery). Mr. Tran Tuan Kiet was voted as the outstanding coach. The Vietnamese women's volleyball team is the outstanding team.
Meanwhile, the title of outstanding disabled athlete belongs to Le Van Cong (weightlifting), who won the bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
