After the first half of the 2023 FA Community Shield at Wembley, both Man City and Arsenal failed to score, with goals only coming to the two teams in the second half. The reigning Premier League champions opened the scoring in the 77th minute through Cole Palmer. The substitute striker had a beautiful turn and curled shot, defeating goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
After the opening goal, Man City had another chance to increase the gap in the 82nd minute, but Phil Foden could not beat Ramsdale after a face-off.
The game on the field then completely tilted towards Man City and everyone thought about a victory for coach Pep Guardiola and his team, but the surprise happened in the 90+11 minute. Leandro Trossard had a shot that hit center back Manuel Akanji and then changed direction and flew into the net of goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.
Tied 1-1 after regulation time, the two teams had to decide the winner on penalties.
In this nerve-wracking penalty shootout, all four Arsenal players scored successfully, while Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri from Man City failed.
Defeating Man City 4-1 on penalties, Arsenal won the 2023 English Super Cup.
This is the second time Arteta has beaten Pep in the Arsenal dugout. The first was a 2-0 FA Cup win at Wembley on July 19, 2020. Since then, Arteta's Gunners have lost eight consecutive games to Pep's Citizens in all competitions (six in the Premier League, one in the League Cup and one in the FA Cup).
This victory in the Community Shield played a very important psychological turning point for Arteta and his students to confidently enter a new season with the ambition of overthrowing Man City's dominance.
For Man City, this is the third consecutive year they have failed in the Community Shield match.
