Lai Ching-teh, currently the Vice President of Taiwan, represented the Democratic Progressive Party and ran against two other candidates, Hou You-yi of the Kuomintang (KMT) and Ko Wen-je of the Taiwan People's Party (TPP), which was founded in 2019.

According to Reuters, Mr. Hou You-yi admitted defeat in the Taiwan leadership election on January 13.

Mr. Hou Youyi congratulated Mr. Lai Thanh Duc on his election victory and apologized to KMT supporters for their defeat.

Thus, the Democratic Progressive Party successfully won re-election for a third term, marking an unprecedented victory under the island's current electoral system.

Before the election, mainland China warned candidate Lai Thanh Duc for his outspoken views on the island's independence, an issue Beijing considers a "red line".

The Global Times quoted Chen Ban-hua, spokesman for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, as pointing out that Lai's statements showed that if elected, he would promote the issue of "Taiwan independence" and create a dangerous situation in the Taiwan Strait.

Lai Ching-te is expected to become the successor to Tsai Ing-wen in May.
