The European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell recently said that both he and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi want to strengthen EU-China relations.

In a statement posted on his social media account X (formerly Twitter) after a phone call with Minister Wang Yi on August 6, Mr. Borrell said the two sides discussed the upcoming Strategic Dialogue in Beijing to prepare for the EU-China Summit.

In addition, the two officials also exchanged views on the situation in Niger after the coup and the Ukraine Peace Conference in Saudi Arabia.

On the same day, the Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed that Mr. Borrell will visit China this fall.

According to the ministry, in a phone call with Mr. Borrell on August 6, Minister Wang Yi "China welcomes" the EU diplomat and his delegation to visit and have a strategic dialogue this fall to prepare for the China-EU Summit through in-depth exchanges.

Wang Yi also said China is always optimistic about promoting relations with the EU, and highly appreciated the meetings between Chinese and European leaders planned this year.

Minister Wang Yi affirmed that China looks forward to the upcoming summit, which is expected to guide China-EU relations and promote bilateral cooperation strategically.

He also called for closer ties between China and the EU, stressing that Beijing is seeking more dialogue mechanisms to make up for the decline in exchanges between China and the EU during the COVID-19 pandemic and inject new momentum into bilateral relations.

The annual strategic dialogue is a necessary precursor to the EU-China summit, which is expected to take place before the end of this year.
