Dang Thi Thanh Thuy (born in 2001, from Thai Binh), is a student majoring in Garment Technology, School of Materials, Hanoi University of Science and Technology. In early January, Thuy was one of three students of Hanoi University of Science and Technology to receive the title of "5 Good Students" at the Central level. To achieve this achievement, students must practice in 5 criteria including: Good ethics - Good study - Good physical strength - Good volunteering - Good integration.
With an average score of 3.84 in the exams, a scientific article published in a prestigious journal recognized by the State Council of Professors, and a series of titles and certificates of merit in competitions and movements, Thuy became one of 74 students nationwide to achieve this title.
“This is something I never thought of before. Hanoi University of Science and Technology is the launching pad that creates changes in me, so that I can be passionate and live my student life to the fullest,” Thuy said.
Few people know that before that, Thanh Thuy failed her first choice to study Economics. Feeling sad and disappointed, the female student often thought about retaking the exam.
Being an active student in school activities, when choosing a university, Thuy did not take too much time to decide to apply to a top economic school. “I think the dynamic Economics major will suit my personality. Moreover, career opportunities in this major will also be very open.”
But in the 2019 admissions season, Thuy was one point short of getting into the school. She was then admitted to the Garment Technology major at Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
Disappointed because she failed to get into her favorite major, Thuy was even more "shocked" when she couldn't catch up during her first time studying at the Polytechnic.
“I was overwhelmed because most of the general subjects were very heavy and difficult. While the teachers taught so quickly that I didn’t even have time to understand this formula, they had already written a bunch of other knowledge on the board.”
Thuy once thought that she would never be able to “integrate” into the learning routine of the Polytechnic. Thuy’s older siblings – former students of the school – also advised her to retake the entrance exam to the University of Economics to “take it easy”.
“But I couldn’t bear to give up before I tried my best. I planned to try to finish my first year and see what would happen,” Thuy recalled.
Luckily, at that time, Thuy had a group of close friends who were always ready to help and support her. Instead of “closing the book” when encountering difficult knowledge, Thuy proactively interacted with teachers, friends and seniors to get answers to her concerns.
Thuy also joined the first-year Executive Committee of the Youth Union and Student Association - a special organization for new students. Here, Thuy met many seniors who were good at extracurricular activities and had excellent academic achievements. The female student was shared with the learning methods for each subject, how to choose review materials...
According to Thuy, to study well at Bách khoa, in addition to following the lectures in class, learning from friends and talented people around is also the secret to helping yourself progress.
After 1 year, Thuy realized that many things at the University of Technology were different from what she had thought before. “When I focused, I found that studying at the University of Technology was not as difficult as I thought. The school also had many activities and clubs that gave me the opportunity to develop myself.”
After the first year, Thuy moved to work at the Scientific Research and Career Guidance Department of the Hanoi University of Science and Technology Youth Union, and was also the Vice President of the Student Union of the Institute of Textiles, Footwear and Fashion. The female student also maintained her GPA at Excellent level, and won the school's A-level scholarship many times.
In addition to studying, Thuy also participated in national English Olympiads for students and presentation competitions. In 2022, while in her third year, Thuy co-authored a scientific article published in the Journal of Applied Chemistry.
Associate Professor Dr. Phan Thanh Thao, Head of the Faculty of Textiles, Footwear and Fashion, assessed Thuy as an intelligent person with a spirit of learning. “Thuy always maintains high academic results, and is very enthusiastic in participating in union activities and volunteer activities. Thuy is a typical example of a generation of students who are both talented and dedicated,” said Ms. Thao.
Looking back at her studies at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Thuy feels that failing her first choice is not a bad thing. “At Hanoi University of Science and Technology, I can be myself and express all my abilities and personality,” Thuy said.
Choosing Garment Technology, Thuy said that this is also an industry with wide-open job opportunities, especially in provinces and cities with headquarters of garment enterprises such as Thai Binh, Nam Dinh...
“When I chose this major, many people told me that I would only work as a garment worker in the future. But in fact, from the second year, we learned about the garment production process, sewing techniques and technology, and mass production lines to create finished products,” Thuy said.
Before graduating, Thuy also received job offers from several garment companies. However, the female student said she plans to pursue a master's degree to expand her career opportunities in the future.
