Colombian authorities are trying to find Wilson, the dog who helped sniff out four babies in the Amazon rainforest but went missing days before the successful operation.

The discovery of four children lost in the Colombian Amazon jungle after more than 40 days has brought joy to their families and the people of this country. But not all the news is good as Wilson, the Belgian Shepherd dog involved in the search operation, is still missing.

"During Operation Hope, Wilson got lost in the jungles of Caqueta and Guaviare," the Colombian military tweeted on June 10, referring to the mission to rescue the four children. Wilson reportedly sensed the group and was with them before the rescue team arrived. In fact, rescuers found Wilson's footprints near where the four children were found.

Wilson was last seen on June 8, when Carlos Villegas, a member of the Colombian Civil Defense, spotted him about 40 meters away. "My comrades tried to play with him, calm him, call him to see if he would come towards us, but the dog got scared and ran away and got lost in the forest again," he said.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro also said on June 9 that Wilson had not been found. According to him, at some point the dog had found the four children, but they had chased it away in self-defense.

After more than 40 days in the jungle, Colombian rescuers announced on June 9 that they had found four Huitoto indigenous children who had survived a plane crash on May 1. They were taken to a hospital in the capital Bogota in a very weak condition and are expected to stay there for at least two weeks.

President Petro called the incident a "miraculous lesson in survival" and said he believed the story would "go down in history". "The forest saved them," he said. "They were children of the forest and now they are children of Colombia."
