CubaDebate, the most visited official news site in the Caribbean island nation, published an article by Dr. Ruvislei González Sáez, Vice President of the Cuba-Vietnam Friendship Association, on September 23. The article highlighted the significance of the State visit to Cuba by General Secretary and President To Lam and affirmed that this event will open a new chapter in the history of bilateral relations.
The Vice President of the Cuba-Vietnam Friendship Association said that General Secretary and President To Lam’s early visit to Cuba since taking office is a testament to the special friendship between the two countries. This shows that Cuba always holds a special position in Vietnam’s foreign policy and diplomacy, despite the geographical distance.
For Cuba, the presence of Comrade To Lam as both General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President is of great significance, clearly demonstrating that Vietnam is always ready and stands side by side with this brotherly island nation. The visit of the General Secretary and President of Vietnam is a great source of spiritual encouragement for Cuba, showing that the Party, State, Government, army and people of Vietnam attach special importance to the bilateral relationship.
Notably, General Secretary and President To Lam's visit to Cuba coincided with the 61st anniversary of the establishment of the Cuban Committee for Solidarity with South Vietnam (September 25, 1963) and the 55th anniversary of implementing Uncle Ho's Testament (September 2, 1969).
Previously in 2022, Comrade To Lam visited Cuba as a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and Minister of Public Security and met with Cuban leader, General Raúl Castro Ruz; First Secretary of the Communist Party and President of Cuba Miguel Mario Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, and many other high-ranking officials of the Party, State and Government of Cuba.
In the history of international relations, the Vietnam-Cuba friendship is exemplary, with a long history and many examples affirming the importance of the bilateral relationship for both countries. Osvaldo Dorticós Torrado was the first head of state from Latin America and the Caribbean to visit Vietnam in 1966; Fidel Castro was the first and only head of government in the world to visit the newly liberated area in South Vietnam in 1973; Prime Minister Pham Van Dong's 1974 trip to Cuba was the first official visit by a high-ranking Vietnamese leader to the Americas. When Cuban Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro passed away, the first foreign delegation to come to Havana to express condolences was the Vietnamese delegation. When General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong passed away, Cuba was also the first foreign delegation to come to Vietnam. In addition, there are many other milestones demonstrating the rare and special bilateral relationship.
Dr. González Sáez stressed that it is important to convey this spirit to the younger generation, so that the legacy of bilateral relations is maintained and promoted.
In recent times, political-diplomatic relations and people-to-people exchanges between Vietnam and Cuba have reached their highest level, however, economic, trade and financial relations between the two countries have yet to develop to their current potential. Vietnam is currently the main Asian investor in Cuba, but continuing to create conditions for the two sides to further develop bilateral business activities will be of great value for mutual benefit. Bilateral trade needs to be more dynamic, especially since the two countries have had a Trade Agreement since 2020 to facilitate exchange activities.
In that context, Mr. González Sáez hopes that the visit of General Secretary and President To Lam will be an opportunity for the leaders of the two countries to discuss the actual situation of each country and promote comprehensive relationship mechanisms, creating a new milestone in bilateral relations, opening a new phase.
Therefore, the Vice President of the Cuba-Vietnam Friendship Association believes that the visit will certainly strengthen the long-term cooperative relationship in all fields.
Below the article, many readers left comments and shared their views with the author, appreciating the special friendship between Cuba and Vietnam, a rare brotherhood that has overcome countless challenges over the past 60 years. Geographical distance cannot prevent friendship. The Cuban people always admire the indomitable spirit, the will to be self-reliant, the diligence, courage, intelligence, creativity in studying, working, producing and fighting, and especially the peace-loving spirit of the Vietnamese people.
