Thanh Son District Forest Protection Department staff inspect converted large timber plantations.

Compared to small timber plantations, the profit from large timber forests is many times higher depending on the age of exploitation and tree diameter. Just for the popular tree species, acacia, exploitation in the 5th-6th year can only be sold as wood chips, with a value of about 60-80 million VND/ha. But when becoming a large timber plantation, with a exploitation cycle of 10-12 years, most trees reach a diameter of 20cm or more; the forest will be sold at the price of sawn timber, processed timber with an average value of over 150 million VND/ha. Planting large timber forests not only reduces the initial cost of planting forests, increases the quality of wood due to the long-term storage of trees, increases soil fertility to help protect the ecological environment and increases forest cover.

Mr. Truong Thanh Yen, Su Ngoai area, Cu Thang commune said: “In the past, there was a lot of forest land but my family and many households in the commune did not know how to do it effectively, the value was not high, so hunger and poverty kept following. Currently, with nearly 15 hectares of acacia trees, thanks to the propaganda about the benefits of converting large timber forests, the family decided to convert large timber forests with a harvesting cycle of 10-12 years to increase the size and price when harvesting. In particular, when participating in converting large timber forests, the family also received support money from the State to have more funds to take better care of the forest.”

Through research, we learned that every year, the district plants over 2,500 hectares of concentrated forests, plants nearly 400,000 scattered trees; takes care of nearly 8,000 hectares of planted forests; the exploited timber output reaches over 190,000m3; plants over 1,000 hectares of large timber forests in the communes of Dong Cuu, Kha Cuu, Thuong Cuu, Yen Son, Huong Can, Thach Khoan, Cu Thang, Vo Mieu, Yen Lang...; the main tree species are: Acacia auriculiformis, fat, and doi.

Comrade Tran Quang Hung - Head of the District Forest Protection Department shared: “Planting and converting from small timber to large timber is an important solution to change the current state of forestry economy. To achieve the goal in the coming time, the district continues to direct communes, towns, departments, branches and organizations to strengthen leadership, direction, propaganda and mobilize people to implement large timber forest planting projects, successfully completing the target of large timber forest planting area. Along with that, the District Forest Protection Department promotes propaganda on economic efficiency as well as technical guidance on intensive large timber forest planting and conversion of large timber forests; encourages businesses and families to join in investing in planting large timber forests to develop large timber forest areas in the area, contributing to improving economic efficiency and reducing poverty in the locality”.
