Prof. Dr. Le Ngoc Thanh, principal of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, said he had just returned from a business trip to France. On the outbound leg, when the plane had already taken off, the flight attendant called for a doctor because a passenger was sick.
"There were also some doctors in my working group. We went straight to the sick passenger's location as instructed by the flight attendant and saw that he had collapsed, had difficulty breathing, and had an irregular pulse. However, there were no means of first aid or diagnosis, so we let the passenger breathe oxygen and lie still to monitor him," said Professor Thanh.
Professor Thanh added that because there were no means of diagnosis, all the doctors were worried about the passenger's life, assessing that the patient might have had a heart attack and needed immediate emergency care. About 1 hour after takeoff, the plane encountered problems and had to return to Noi Bai, giving the passenger a chance.
"When arriving at Noi Bai, there was an idea to take this passenger to Nam Thang Long Hospital, the closest medical facility to the airport, but I suggested that we should go to E Hospital, which has more emergency equipment.
The ambulance arrived and took the passenger to E Hospital. Later, I learned that the passenger did not have a heart attack but an overdose of medication. The patient was given emergency treatment and was discharged safely. As for us, at 4am that morning, we were transferred to another plane and continued our journey," said Professor Thanh.
Mr. Thanh added that he has been a medical professional for nearly 40 years and has flown many flights, but this is the first time he has encountered a patient on an airplane.
He also recommended that when training flight attendants, in addition to the current skills of assisting and giving first aid to passengers in trouble, they should also learn where to take passengers to a medical facility for the safest and most appropriate treatment.
Previously, at the beginning of this year, 20 minutes after the flight departed from Buon Ma Thuot to Hanoi, a male passenger suddenly had difficulty breathing, sweated, and had low blood pressure. Luckily, on the flight there was a female doctor working at a district medical center in Cao Bang who quickly provided emergency care to the patient.
