With her strong foreign language skills, Nguyen Uyen Nhi, a 12th grader at Dai Mo High School, chose English as her first choice. As for her second choice, Nhi is hesitating between Geography and Economic and Legal Education.
Nhi said that according to the enrollment plan of many universities in 2025, the number of schools with admission combinations including Economic and Legal Education is not much. Meanwhile, Geography is easy to "grab" high scores, but the competition for admission to schools with this admission combination will also be very high.
“If I want to ensure I pass my graduation exam, I will choose subjects that are easy to get high scores. However, the choice of subjects also greatly affects the university entrance exam results, so I am considering it,” Nhi said.
The 2025 high school graduation exam is the first year to be organized according to the 2018 General Education Program, with the difference being that it focuses on assessing learners' abilities instead of assessing knowledge and skills like previous exams.
Candidates graduating from high school in 2025 will take 4 subjects, including 2 compulsory subjects: Math, Literature and 2 optional subjects chosen by candidates from the subjects chosen in grade 12, including: Foreign Language, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, History, Information Technology, Technology, Economic and Legal Education.
With this regulation, candidates will have 36 ways to choose subject combinations for the 2025 high school graduation exam.
There is not much time left until the exam. Therefore, at this time, many 12th grade students have basically decided on 2 subjects to choose. In fact, the percentage of candidates choosing English, Geography, History is higher than natural subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology.
Trinh Minh Chau, a 12th grader at Nguyen Hue High School (Hanoi), said he chose History and Geography for the upcoming exam. These two subjects are also suitable for his desire to study Journalism and Communications, which he loves.
However, Chau said she is very worried because the Social Science exam scores in recent years have been very high. Therefore, after the Tet holiday, she will spend most of her time self-studying, reviewing, and preparing herself mentally for the exam.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, in the 2024 High School Graduation Exam, nearly 1.1 million candidates nationwide registered to take the exam. Of these, 37% of candidates registered for the Natural Science exam (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and 63% of candidates chose the Social Science exam (History, Geography, Civic Education). Compared to 2023, the number of candidates choosing the Social Science exam increased by 7.7% and is the highest since 2017.
According to teachers, the reason many students choose to take English and social science subjects is because they think these subjects are easy to learn, easy to get high scores, and have little pressure during the review period.
However, choosing subjects for the high school graduation exam is an important step, affecting the university admission results as well as the students' careers.
Speaking with reporters of Dai Doan Ket Newspaper, Dr. Hoang Ngoc Vinh - former Director of the Department of Vocational Education (Ministry of Education and Training) noted that candidates need to carefully consider choosing subjects for the 2025 high school graduation exam. If they choose subjects that are easy to take and easy to learn, they will be easy for many candidates. This means that the admission score will be high and the competition rate will not be small.
“Students need to closely follow the information and admission plans announced by universities to have a basis for choosing the correct subject combination, increasing the chance of admission by using the graduation exam results. Students should not choose subjects based on feelings or the majority, but based on their abilities, strengths, and social trends based on the subject combination chosen from grade 10,” Dr. Hoang Ngoc Vinh noted.
