What do you need and what do you get from personalized learning?

Personalized learning is considered an effective learning method when focusing on students, helping to unlock their potential, becoming a launching pad to help many students confidently become global citizens.

Personalized learning is still a fairly new teaching and learning method in Vietnam. So how can Vietnamese students quickly access and maximize the value that this personalized learning method brings?

The pressure of grades makes students forget the joy of learning.

At the Oxford Pathway workshop organized by UTS in collaboration with Oxford University Press, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lan, principal of UTS South American International School, affirmed that the personalized learning method will bring many benefits to Vietnamese students.

Although the reality is that Vietnamese students today are under a lot of pressure about grades and achievements, it will make them forget the joy of learning.

Similarly, an approach that focuses on developing students' holistic health and global citizenship skills is what UTS and the Oxford pathway aim for.

With this approach, students are nurtured with the most natural love of learning.

At the same time, help students understand that learning is not just about learning knowledge, but also learning skills so that they can develop and succeed wherever they are. "Including logical thinking, critical thinking, emotional intelligence (EQ), problem-solving skills...", Ms. Ngoc Lan shared.

Develop self-study ability and personal capacity from personalized learning methods

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lan, if Vietnamese students want to develop their self-study ability and personal capacity, the first thing is to find interest and happiness in learning. This is not an easy thing.

In addition to equipping students with specialized knowledge, students need to be encouraged to develop their ability to self-study and think independently. Students need to learn how to research and solve problems, manage their own time, make decisions and clearly orient their future.

Ms. Lan informed that the Ministry of Education and Training issued Circular 29/2024/TT-BGDDT, regulating extra teaching and learning in general education and continuing education, which is an opportunity for students to study on their own. Parents and teachers need to help students find effective ways to study, instead of depending on extra classes.

"Being in control of one's own life is considered the definition of a leader that we aim for. First, children must be able to lead themselves, then have the skills to work, lead a team, and a collective. And especially, children's leadership must create value for the community and society where they grow up" - Ms. Lan shared.

The first OxfordAQA testing center in Ho Chi Minh City

Oxford University Press (UK) recently awarded OxfordAQA Testing Center recognition to UTS South American International (Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City) - the first in Ho Chi Minh City.

Accordingly, UTS South American International School will be authorized to teach and organize GCSEs (international general secondary education certificates, for grades 9 and 10) and A-levels (higher general education certificates, for grades 11 and 12).

Tom Galvin, head of quality assurance at OxfordAQA, said the organisation's international GCSEs are designed for students aged 14 to 16, while A-levels are for those aged 16 to 18.

These are international certificates that give students an advantage when applying to universities, opening up opportunities to be admitted to Ivy League universities (USA), universities in the UK and 170 other countries around the world that accept A-levels certificates.

In Vietnam, students can use A-level to apply to top universities: Hanoi University of Science and Technology, National Economics University (Hanoi), Foreign Trade University (Hanoi), International University (Ho Chi Minh City National University). In addition, students can also apply to units with international elements, such as VinUni University (Hanoi), British Vietnam (Hanoi), Viet Duc (Ho Chi Minh City), RMIT (Ho Chi Minh City)...

OxfordAQA is a prestigious examination board, established by the cooperation between OUP and AQA (the UK examinations organization), currently taught in more than 500 schools worldwide. According to the UK Qualifications Recognition Centre (UK NARIC), OxfordAQA, Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel are the examination boards recognized for degrees and certificates equivalent to GCSEs and A-levels in the UK.
