For over 20 years, he has always been a volunteer in difficult situations, performing many special tasks, facing fierce fires in fires, wading through deep forests and dangerous caves to search and rescue, and saving the lives of many people.
In most of the fires and incidents that the unit participated in handling, Mr. Thanh was always the first to take the lead in performing the difficult tasks. Sometimes he dived deep into the black canal, sometimes he rushed into a big fire, trying to bring the victims out safely... Not only in Ho Chi Minh City , he also joined the reinforcement team of Ho Chi Minh City Police to support other localities. One of his special marks was joining the Vietnam People's Police force to help Turkey overcome the consequences of the historic earthquake in early 2023...

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Chi Thanh will never forget the search for the remains of a victim who fell into a cave hundreds of meters deep in Cao Bang province in 2019. The victim fell into the cave more than 3 years ago, but the local search and rescue team could not reach the bottom of the cave, so they needed the help of the Ho Chi Minh City Police Search and Rescue Force. Thanh and his teammates surveyed and carefully assessed the scene and developed a rescue plan. “To get to the bottom of the cave hundreds of meters away, I followed the cable line, stopping every few meters to rest and get oxygen. When I got to the bottom of the cave, I carefully collected the remains of the victim to bring them out... The emotions of the victims and their families during the search and rescue operations gave us many emotions and motivation to stick with the profession,” he shared.
Over the past 20 years, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Chi Thanh has participated in nearly 1,000 firefighting and rescue operations, saving hundreds of people in fires, explosions, drownings, and accidents; searching for victims' bodies and evidence of cases... He suffered a spinal injury while on duty, was stabbed by sharp objects, and his body is still covered with scars. With many outstanding achievements, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Chi Thanh has been repeatedly recognized by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee as an outstanding example in the patriotic emulation movement.
Talking about his subordinate, Colonel Huynh Quang Tam, Head of the Fire Prevention, Fire Fighting and Rescue Police Department, Ho Chi Minh City Police proudly said: "Comrade Thanh is a typical example of the fire prevention, fire fighting and rescue police force, with many outstanding achievements and feats. He always shows enthusiasm, is ready to accept, strives to overcome difficulties, and courageously completes all tasks well, no matter how difficult or dangerous they are."
After more than 20 years of working, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Chi Thanh's family life is still difficult, he has no house and has to rent a room. In mid-March 2023, Ho Chi Minh City Police organized a gift for his family to have a Comrades House. That concern further motivated Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Chi Thanh to continue to devote himself to his noble mission.
