The far-right and populist party of politician Geert Wilders not only became the largest political party in the new parliament, but also more than doubled its number of seats compared to the previous election in 2021.
Dutch politics has clearly shifted to the right and the far right, and the right-wing bias in this country contributes to the ongoing right-wing and far-right trend in Europe. Mr. Wilders has views that are considered extreme and populist, such as de-Islamizing the Netherlands, closing down mosques and churches, not accepting foreign immigrants and refugees, and taking the Netherlands out of the EU...
Mr. Geert Wilders
His political party has only one member, Mr. Wilders himself. This shows that Dutch voters in the recent election chose their leaders before choosing their political parties. Fear of the future and fear of future uncertainties influenced voters' voting decisions. This pessimistic and uncertain mood is fertile ground for the strong rise of populism and the trend of political and social radicalization in many European countries today.
The Netherlands has been a laboratory of power politics in Europe for many years now. The results of the recent Dutch parliamentary elections are therefore likely to be a blueprint for elections in many other parts of the continent. Mr Wilders is expected to win the election but will not easily take power, as the formation of a new government is difficult and time-consuming, a political tradition in the Netherlands.
