Ho Chi Minh City - As soon as he saw the image of the girl printed on the billboard advertising a course, Nguyen Tuan felt like he had just been struck by "love at first sight" so he decided to register for the course.
It was 2017 when the young man from Seattle (USA) returned to Ho Chi Minh City to visit his family. "At that time, I didn't know if the girl was a lecturer or a student, but I knew that if I wanted to find her, the only way was to take a risk and register for the course," Nguyen Tuan said.
When he went to school, the Vietnamese-American guy found out that the girl was Phan My Thanh, 20 years old, a second-year student, an academic manager for the course and a model for the school. Following the habit of American students, Tuan went to the faculty office to ask for My Thanh's work schedule but couldn't find her many times.

A month after the opening day, the two met for the first time when Thanh appeared in class to assist the lecturer. The boy approached her to get to know her, but as soon as he lowered his head to look at Thanh's name tag pinned on his shirt, she mistook him for a "perverted student".
Knowing that Tuan was the one who had asked for her work schedule, Thanh tried even harder to avoid him. Looking up his attendance schedule, she saw that he was often late for class, so she came to class very early. Unexpectedly, from the first meeting, Tuan diligently came to class early in the hope of having a chance to meet Thanh. Every time he saw the academic manager checking equipment and preparing drinks for the lecturers, the overseas Vietnamese man flirted with her.
But all he got was indifference.
Tuan changed his plan, staying in class after school because he knew Thanh was the last one to leave. Every time she cleaned up, she felt the guy following her, making the female student uncomfortable. One time she asked him what he wanted. "I want your phone number to ask more about the program," Tuan replied. Unable to refuse, Thanh gave him her number, but did not receive any questions about the course, only messages asking about or making appointments to meet.
Knowing that he could not move the girl, Nguyen Tuan spoke up to the course manager, saying that Thanh did not answer the students' questions. After being reminded, the girl reluctantly texted Tuan and received an invitation: "I will ask for a meeting and then release you."
Too tired of being stalked, Thanh accepted with the thought of "just this once". Before going to the date, she sent her location to her close friends and planned a rescue scenario because she was afraid Tuan would "play tricks".
As for Tuan, he researched Thanh's favorite food and chose a sidewalk noodle shop where she often went. After eating, Thanh proactively paid and got in the car to leave. At this time, the guy ran after her and said that he had never met a girl who paid and left on their first date like that. Reluctantly, Thanh agreed to let him invite her to coffee again.
After chatting for a while, Thanh realized that Tuan was not what she had thought before. They both grew up in single-parent families, and it was very difficult for them to pursue their studies and later work.
"I gradually stopped being wary of him and started to sympathize with him. Despite his tough appearance, deep inside Tuan is a very emotional person," Thanh said.
Tuan used to do business in the US, when he returned to Vietnam he ran an online business. When their relationship improved, it was time for him to return to the US, but he decided to stay in Vietnam to get to know the girl he had just met. It was for this reason that after a few months, when Tuan proposed to Thanh, she agreed.
After being together for a while, Thanh got into a traffic accident while walking around town. The moment he put his lover in the ambulance, Tuan suddenly trembled because he was afraid of losing her. "I have to protect this girl. She is the most important girl in my life", that thought kept going around in his mind.
As soon as Thanh was discharged from the hospital and returned home, he knelt down to propose, giving her a ring and promising, "Only when I take the ring off will we officially break up." They promised to wait until Thanh graduated from school to get married.
But there was a time when their relationship had to stop when Thanh had conflicts with Tuan's family. The couple's dates became stifling. One day, Thanh suggested a temporary breakup so that they could have more time to think.
During the time they didn't see each other, they both threw themselves into work and study. Thanh tried to finish her university degree while Tuan started building his own business in Vietnam. Even though they didn't contact each other, the girl still followed her lover's personal page and discovered that he was still wearing an engagement ring on his ring finger.
After 6 months of separation, knowing that she still loved Tuan very much, on his birthday, Thanh took the initiative to come to his house to give him a gift and to resolve the conflict with everyone in the family. From then on, they got back together and together discussed the rules of conduct when living together.
"Tuan didn't want me to feel more resentful, so he proposed those rules. Seeing him constantly mentioning the wedding when we had just gotten back together, I understood that this man was always serious about me," Thanh said.

While preparing for the engagement in early 2020, Thanh discovered that she had grade three endometriosis, making it difficult for her to get pregnant. Knowing that Tuan always longed for a child in the family, she proposed to break up, but he objected. Tuan encouraged his lover to adopt a child if he could not give birth on his own.
The couple's wedding was therefore still scheduled for January 2021. A week earlier, Thanh was surprised to learn that she was pregnant. This was also the first time in many years together that she saw Tuan - the man she thought was strong and fearless - cry.
To take care of his wife, Tuan has switched all his work to online mode, spending all his time with her. Thanh's diet and exercise regimen during pregnancy are also planned and supervised by her husband. If there is an urgent need to go out to meet guests, he also takes his wife along because he is not comfortable leaving her at home alone. In July 2021, Thanh gave birth to her first daughter, both mother and child are healthy.
Since having children, even though she has been pushed to second place in the family, Thanh has always been happy because of her husband's love and care. She said that Tuan has made her change positively by knowing how to eat scientifically and exercise more regularly.
"If it weren't for his patience, we wouldn't have been able to be together for so long, and I wouldn't be who I am today," Thanh shared.
As for Tuan, he said that he and his wife are compatible in terms of thoughts, ideas and emotions. It is Thanh's simple, unpretentious personality that makes the overseas Vietnamese man love and appreciate her the most.
