The Cao Bo - Mai Son Expressway was just put into operation in 2022, but the locality had to propose an expansion due to congestion and many accidents due to the lack of an emergency lane.
The 15.2km Cao Bo - Mai Son expressway, part of the North - South expressway project, was put into operation in February 2022 with a limited four-lane scale.
After a period of operation, the highway revealed limitations such as traffic congestion during holidays and Tet, and even increased traffic accidents due to the lack of emergency lanes.
Therefore, the Department of Transport of Ninh Binh province has just sent a document to the Ministry of Transport requesting investment in the construction and expansion of the above section to a complete 6-lane scale. The purpose is to meet the transportation and travel needs of the people, reduce traffic accidents, and reduce congestion in the northern gateway area of the capital Hanoi.
The investment plan proposed by this locality is to expand the roadbed by 15.75m to ensure the roadbed width of 32.75m as planned, in which the road surface width for 6 lanes is 22.5m wide. At the same time, additional investment will be made for four bridges on the main route, namely Cao Bo, Cam bridge, Highway 10 overpass, and Quan Vinh bridge.
The total cost of expanding the Cao Bo - Mai Son expressway is estimated by the provincial Department of Transport at VND2,076 billion, including construction costs and contingency, excluding site clearance costs which have been previously implemented. However, the locality did not specify the source of capital or the investment unit.
