Sharing with VietNamNet reporter, Dr. of Mathematics Tran Nam Dung - Vice Principal of Gifted High School (Ho Chi Minh City National University) said that Mr. Pham Ngoc Anh Cuong passed away due to a stroke.

According to Dr. Dung, Mr. Pham Ngoc Anh Cuong was a teammate in the legendary quartet Tiep - Trinh - Long - Cuong participating in IMO 1979.

At this exam, Vietnam had 4 candidates winning medals, including: Le Ba Khanh Trinh (student of Quoc Hoc Hue High School) - 40/40 points - Gold Medal - special award; Pham Ngoc Anh Cuong (student of Hanoi High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences) - 33 points - Silver Medal; Bui Ta Long (student of Hanoi High School for the Gifted in Pedagogy) - 32 points - Silver Medal; Pham Huu Tiep (student of Chu Van An High School, Hanoi) - 29 points - Silver Medal.

According to Dr. Dung, compared to the three other contestants who won medals, Mr. Pham Ngoc Anh Cuong is not as famous, but he is one of the few people who have had an article published in Doklady Akademy Nauk - Russian Academy of Sciences. Mr. Cuong's article was introduced by Professor Novikov and published in 1985, this is an achievement that few people have.

After working abroad, Mr. Cuong returned to Vietnam to work at the Institute of Mathematics, but due to health problems, he could not continue his research.

“In real life, Mr. Cuong was a very nice and honest person. He was not good at football but he always participated fully. When he kicked the ball, it was difficult for the goalkeeper to block because the trajectory of the ball was unpredictable. Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh once called Mr. Cuong by a respectful nickname "big brother" - Dr. Dung said and said that he was sad when he heard that the 1979 IMO Silver Medalist had passed away.
