Born and raised in the difficult land of Quang Binh, in a family with a rich revolutionary tradition with three generations serving in the military (Captain Ngo Duc Anh's grandfather and four uncles were all in the Navy), the dream of going out to sea grew bigger and bigger in his mind.

Captain Ngo Duc Anh is researching to fix the damage to the torpedo homing head.

“When I was a child, my grandfather told me about his trips on the vast ocean, his memories of his work in Truong Sa, and the salty sea-flavored gifts of shells, coral branches, or sponges that his uncles brought back made me always excited. My father was unable to join the army due to health conditions, so I decided to follow the military career to fulfill his wish,” Captain Duc Anh confided.

In 2011, after graduating from high school, the student born in 1993 passed the entrance exam to the Naval Academy and majored in weapons. Studying and being exposed to many types of modern naval weapons gradually formed in him a passion for science and technology.

During his time as a student, Captain Duc Anh boldly proposed the idea of the topic "Application of digital technology to improve the torpedo firing circuit on the 159AE submarine hunter" at the Underwater Weapons Department.

After a year of research, successfully defending the idea and implementation plan, the topic was allowed by the Naval Academy to be developed into a graduation thesis project and achieved excellent results. The product is the basis for initial algorithm research and proposing a plan to improve the firing circuit on anti-submarine ships in the Vietnam Navy.

Captain Ngo Duc Anh reported on his initiative to serve combat readiness training tasks at the unit's Competition.

In 2016, after graduating, Captain Duc Anh was assigned to work at Base 696 of Naval Region 2 (now the Naval Region 2 Technical Support Center) as a Branch Chief. Promoting his strengths in scientific research, he proposed many ideas and initiatives to improve the quality of training at the unit.

“During the period 2016-2020, I directly developed 5 initiatives to serve training and improve the efficiency of torpedo repair tasks; at the same time, I helped many teammates complete initiatives and improvements, creating a vibrant scientific research movement in the unit. Also during this period, I was trusted by my superiors to participate in building the 1241.8 Crew Training Simulation Center at Brigade 167,” said Captain Duc Anh.

Captain Ngo Duc Anh is one of 85 "Excellent young cadres, civil servants and public employees nationwide" and one of 80 outstanding cadres and youth union members in the Army for the period 2017-2024.

During the period 2017-2024, Captain Ngo Duc Anh - Deputy Head of Station 63 of the Technical Support Center of Naval Region 3 continuously won the title of Emulation Fighter at the grassroots level and was twice awarded the title of Emulation Fighter of the whole army; won many Creative Youth Awards in the Army and the Nguyen Phan Vinh Award of the Navy.

In 2024, Captain Ngo Duc Anh was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the General Department of Politics for his outstanding achievements in Youth Union activities and youth movements in the period 2017-2024; was awarded the title "National Excellent Young Cadre, Civil Servants and Public Employees" by the Central Youth Union along with many other forms of commendation.

In early 2021, according to the above assignment, Captain Duc Anh returned to hold the position of Branch Chief at Station 63 of the Technical Assurance Center of Naval Region 3 and was appointed Deputy Station Chief of Station 63 that same year.

Station 63 is a technical support unit with the core task of preserving, maintaining, periodically inspecting, and upgrading torpedoes to serve combat training and combat readiness missions of Region 3 and the Navy; coordinating with other units in the Navy to repair and restore torpedoes periodically every year, including the 53VA torpedo.

According to Captain Duc Anh, the 53VA torpedo is a heavy-weight torpedo with a diameter of 533mm, a length of 7,900m, a weight of nearly 2 tons, including 210kg of high explosive. This is a gas-powered torpedo with a passive acoustic homing head and a non-contact detonation system used to destroy enemy surface ships and coastal fortifications. The torpedo is launched from submarines or surface ships and can easily destroy enemy warships in one shot.

With the spirit of "When work is done, not when time is up" and the will to never give up, Captain Duc Anh has continuously learned to master the industry's equipment, organized the industry to complete all torpedo firing missions during the year and put forward initiatives to improve the efficiency of torpedo upgrading missions.

Captain Duc Anh said that while working at Station 63, he realized that the technical work of the unit still had potential risks of unsafety, lack of backup equipment in case of damage, and wasting time, effort, manpower, and materials when preserving, maintaining, and upgrading torpedoes.

Therefore, unlike training initiatives that do not affect real equipment, technical innovation initiatives have a direct impact on equipment with the ultimate goal of ensuring safety and increasing mission effectiveness.

Captain Ngo Duc Anh (in white shirt) instructs young technicians on the exploitation and operation of the torpedo control machine inspection line.

From this thought, he researched the initiative of “Torpedo homing head test conversion cable set”. This product requires in-depth research on the nature of equipment of many types of torpedoes, many types of test lines to find common points, points that can be converted to connect. At the same time, it must process signals as small as microvolts and ensure the safety of the equipment.

“After 6 months of research and multiple tests, the initiative was approved and put into use. The product has helped reduce the frequency of exploitation on the 53VA Torpedo self-guided test line. Thereby increasing the equipment's lifespan, being able to convert equivalent equipment between two lines, increasing the amount of spare equipment when performing tasks in case of failure and improving combat readiness,” said the Deputy Head of Station 63.

Next, Captain Duc Anh had another initiative: "Improving the battery of the torpedo percussion set for practice shooting with lithium batteries". This initiative requires calculations to ensure absolute safety for the torpedo, while ensuring the features as the equipment and not affecting the structure and center of gravity of the torpedo. In particular, the product applies the latest lithium battery technology to replace traditional batteries.

Captain Ngo Duc Anh briefed the unit's soldiers on the mission before organizing the torpedo upgrade.

Captain Ngo Duc Anh instructed the crew to hand over the torpedo to the torpedo boat.

“It took me nearly a year of research and testing many times to achieve satisfactory results. This initiative is also the basis for continuing research to replace the original batteries currently in use in torpedoes in particular and many technical equipment and specialized vehicles in general throughout the army,” said Captain Duc Anh.

Still related to… torpedoes, one of the projects that the young “soldier scientist” is most proud of is the “53VA Torpedo Air Chamber Disassembly Support System” to be completed in 2024.

Captain Duc Anh said: After directly building the successful initiative "53VA Torpedo Steering Machine Testing Equipment" in 2023 to help reduce the frequency of exploiting the torpedo comprehensive testing machine, he realized that the process of preserving and maintaining this special weapon still needed additional support. After completion, the 53VA torpedo air chamber disassembly and assembly support system helped mechanize the air chamber disassembly and assembly process, shortening the implementation time and reducing the effort of the troops.
