According to city leaders, Can Gio international transit port is a strategic project, a new driving force to promote economic development for Ho Chi Minh City.

He affirmed that when the project is formed and put into operation, Can Gio port together with Cai Mep-Thi Vai port will form an international transit port cluster.

“This port cluster will affirm Vietnam’s position on the map of international transit ports. From there, it will participate in the global transit and supply chain. This port cluster will have a great impact on the socio-economic situation not only of Ho Chi Minh City but also of the region and Vietnam,” Mr. Phan Van Mai affirmed.

Ho Chi Minh City leaders said that after having the investment policy, the city is coordinating with relevant parties to carry out the work of selecting investors.

Mr. Mai also informed that the city strives to start construction of the Can Gio port project phase 1 by September 2.

“I believe that when the project comes into operation, in addition to affirming Vietnam's position on the international transit map, it will positively contribute to import and export, create jobs, and make a large contribution to the national budget,” Mr. Mai expressed.

Developing green and smart ports

Regarding the environmental impact of the project, the city leader said that during the pre-feasibility study, the city determined that the port's technology must be a green port, a smart port, so it will consume the least possible resources.

Regarding the impact on the Can Gio forest biosphere reserve, according to Mr. Mai, the project was chosen in the location with the least impact, the forest area taken for the project will be replanted in other plots.

Specifically, when implementing the project, about 90 hectares of forest will be affected and the city will replant 270 hectares, 3 times the affected area.

The Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City affirmed that he will closely monitor the project implementation to ensure that it has the least impact on the Can Gio Biosphere Reserve and minimizes environmental impacts.

Can Gio-HCMC international transit port model

On January 16, the Prime Minister approved the investment policy for the Can Gio international transit port project (HCMC). The goal is to build and develop the Can Gio international transit port, including services related to the exploitation of container ports, seaports and other services.

In terms of scale, the project has a land use area of ​​about 571 hectares. The investment capital is determined based on the project implementation proposal and the research project of Can Gio international transit port and is not less than 50,000 billion VND.

The Prime Minister assigned the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to direct specialized agencies to specifically determine the total investment capital of the project according to the investor's proposal for recording in the process of granting investment registration certificates according to regulations.

The project enjoys special mechanisms and policies (if any) according to current law provisions.

The Prime Minister noted that the project can only be implemented after it is in accordance with the planning at all levels and the competent authority decides to change the purpose of forest land to another purpose according to the provisions of the law on forestry, the law on land and other relevant regulations...

Investors are not allowed to transfer the project within 5 years from the date of being granted the investment registration certificate.
