Gen Z needs to be equipped with "century skills" to improve competitiveness in the labor market.

As hundreds of thousands of Gen Z students are applying for admission, policymakers, educators, colleges and universities, educational institutions, parents and employers all have a common question: How should we prepare these young people and students to meet the development of the labor market when they graduate?

In the context of a constantly changing world with many new technologies emerging, including artificial intelligence (AI), there is a need for shifts in labor skills to effectively meet the needs of companies and society.

The job market is volatile and many traditional jobs are disappearing or changing very quickly. It is a fact that Generation Z in Vietnam is facing great challenges when looking for a job.

So what do trainers and young Gen Zers need to prepare to meet the development of the labor market?

AI reshapes education

As AI is reshaping the world of work by excelling at pattern recognition and information processing, questions are being raised about the future of information-based jobs. As a result, in many countries, education is increasingly including in the curriculum skills that are considered necessary in this century, such as information technology skills and knowledge of the digital world...

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs report predicts that more than 50% of jobs will be significantly impacted by AI in the next three years. Many educators around the world are recognizing the need to use AI to enhance teaching methods and prepare young people with a range of skills to survive and adapt to a future dominated by many factors.

It is also worth mentioning that recent educational research indicates that we need a curriculum that develops “skills for the 21st century”, in which people value skills-based education (SBE), not outcomes-based education (OBE).

To succeed, Gen Z needs to focus on two key areas: digital skills and the ability to adapt to change. Of these, the ability to adapt quickly to change is increasingly mentioned, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic.

What are “20th Century Skills I”?

Every industry is subject to change at any time, and is constantly disrupted by new ideas and methods. Those that have not been disrupted are not immune, but may have not changed.

With that in mind, the world has entered an era of uncertainty. Gen Z will need to learn how to navigate or respond to the changes that will “flood” their lives, or else they will be left behind or prone to depression.

Although the demand for “21st century skills” is part of the general operating rules of social flows, they are now more essential than ever in a global labor market that is evolving faster by the day.

Partnership for 21st Century Skills (P21) is a prestigious organization that provides the skills needed to succeed in the 21st century environment. This organization currently implements an educational program with the "4 Cs" framework in most schools in the United States.

P21 believes that the foundation of 21st century learning is the acquisition of core subject knowledge and that schools must build on that foundation with additional skill sets, including study skills, life skills and understanding skills .

Learning skills group : Represented by the “4 Cs” of 21st century learning, respectively: critical thinking, communication, cooperation and creativity.

Life skills : Help a person ensure that they can have a successful and independent life both personally and professionally. More specifically in the life skills group, young people need to prepare and have 5 important skills including:

First, be flexible: Change plans when necessary, solve problems creatively and have an innovative, progressive mindset.

Second, leadership: Motivate the team to achieve goals.

Third, initiative: Initiate projects, strategies, and plans yourself.

Fourth, Productivity: Staying productive in an age of distractions.

Fifth, social skills: Meeting and connecting with others for mutual benefit.

Literacy skills : Understanding information, media and technology.

In addition to training these skill sets, educational institutions need to have additional plans to promote a culture that inspires curiosity, creativity and empathy.

With AI increasingly involved in everyday work, the future labor market requires workers to have soft skills that AI does not have, such as compassion, openness, and flexibility. Therefore, equipping young people with the above knowledge and skills is part of the solution, helping them to be much more confident on the path of integration in the future.
