Why is Gen Z increasingly indifferent to online dating?

Online dating apps are likened to "matchmakers" in the digital age. However, they only bring about fleeting relationships that lack depth and consistency.

Once booming like a "fever" in 2015 - 2016, online dating apps like Tinder and Bumble were once like "magnets" attracting young people. These platforms opened a new era for relationships, and almost reshaped the concept of connection in the digital age.

That dramatic transformation has turned dating app companies into “shining stars” in the technology sector. The picture of brilliant growth is depicted through breakthrough business results, typically large corporations such as Match Group - Tinder's parent company - continuously recording strong revenue growth. Their stocks are constantly climbing, creating a focal point attracting the attention and expectations of global investors.

However, recently, Gen Z (born from 1997 - 2021) - the loyal customers of online dating apps, have shown no interest in swiping the screen to find their "other half". They choose to return to authentic, traditional connections.

The initial novelty and appeal of dating apps has now faded, becoming less of an exciting experience and even boring. Fleeting relationships lacking depth and consistency are inevitable consequences, pushing many people to abandon the platform. The superficiality of love has given rise to a desire to rediscover the true value of love in real life.

Many young people share that they have gradually returned to finding the missing piece of their life within their familiar social circle, from friends, acquaintances at school, clubs, or people they meet by chance in extracurricular activities.

Dating someone you already know has many advantages. First, it helps reduce anxiety and stress, and there are many channels of information to compare and verify. At the same time, they can also express themselves in the most natural way in front of the other person, instead of having to build a perfect, somewhat "painted" image online to attract others.

Second, having mutual friends makes the process of getting to know someone easier. It also reduces the fear of rejection or ghosting, which are the biggest barriers that make Gen Z hesitate to use dating apps.

Unlike previous generations, Gen Z grew up in a digital environment where every interaction is recorded and can spread quickly on social media. This makes them more sensitive to the judgments and comments of others.

While previous generations could easily move past rejection and consider it a normal part of life, today’s young people find it harder to deal with these situations. Every failed date, every ignored message can become a haunting experience, affecting their self-esteem and confidence.

In particular, from the operational perspective of dating apps, many people feel that the algorithms used by these platforms are ineffective, not really helping them find suitable people. Instead, they give random and illogical suggestions.

This is a consequence of the increasingly profit-driven strategy of dating app companies. The severely limiting experience for regular users, making it feel like every connection is behind a “paywall,” has left many people feeling frustrated. This abuse not only erodes trust, but also makes them feel like they are just tools for businesses to maximize revenue.

Overall, the shift from virtual connections to genuine relationships could serve as a reminder for tech companies: It's not algorithms, but understanding and authenticity that are the keys to building meaningful and lasting relationships .
