In order to develop and spread the reading culture, in recent times, the National Library of Vietnam has made efforts to mobilize, design and operate a system of libraries throughout the country, down to communes, wards and schools. The Vietnam Publishing Association has also gradually built book streets in major cities, creating reading cultural spaces. However, these local book streets still lack connectivity.
With Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Book Street, a project to build a reading culture space has been approved by the Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee for the past few years with the dream of creating an attractive reading culture address for the community, but until now it has been operating alone. How to connect this book street with other book streets, to join hands with the national and local library systems to develop a reading culture?
Unique but lonely!
Buon Ma Thuot Book and Coffee Street is located in alley 02 Phan Chu Trinh (Buon Ma Thuot City), more than 100 m long, with 23 booths planned to be arranged with areas for activities such as book display, coffee and refreshments, souvenirs, etc. This is a location in the city center, in front of Buon Ma Thuot Cathedral, behind Phan Chu Trinh Secondary School, very convenient for arranging a reading space and organizing community cultural activities, especially for young people and tourists. The function of the book street has been clearly defined, which is to create and honor reading culture, create a destination for cultural experiences, tourism, and a destination to enjoy coffee, coffee culture, and traditional culture of the Central Highlands ethnic groups.

Since March 2019, the book street has been in operation, with Buon Ma Thuot Book Street Investment Joint Stock Company taking responsibility for organizing and operating it. This unit is required to organize and maintain regular activities such as author and work exchanges, introducing thematic events such as Vietnam Book Day, activities on the occasion of national anniversaries, festivals, Tet, etc.; performing traditional cultural and artistic activities, introducing coffee products, etc. With these plans, it is clear that Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Book Street "has a very large operating space" and is very favorable in the trend of local cultural and tourism activities, and the lives of Buon Ma Thuot urban residents, etc.
However, in reality, according to the community's perception, the basic book street activities have not met the set requirements. Some periodic activities have not been organized as planned. The arrangement and attraction of organizations and businesses to participate in exploiting the book street space and operating booths have not been effective.
Need a total link!
Mr. Le Hoang, member of the Vietnam Publishing Association, the host of the Ho Chi Minh City Book Street, shared that the operation of a book street will only be truly effective when it is connected and organized synchronously and scientifically, both exploiting the available space and aiming at the ability to connect with each other, creating a unified space system, sharing thematic activities. From this perspective, the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Book Street is truly a necessary connection point, which has been established very reasonably, but has not had any cooperation, so it operates alone and is not as effective as expected.

In the vision of the Publishing Association, book streets can be organized in major cities of Vietnam, such as Hanoi, Hai Phong, Vinh, Hue, Da Nang, Quy Nhon, Nha Trang, Buon Ma Thuot, Vung Tau, Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho, Dong Thap... Up to now, only a few book streets have been officially established, with operating spaces of their own unique characteristics.
In particular, Ho Chi Minh City book street is evaluated as effective in terms of commercial nature, community activities, tourism experiences... Buon Ma Thuot book street, noted for its position as the capital of the highlands, has its own spaces for local specialties, traditional culture... Taking advantage of this strength, having connections with other book streets, Buon Ma Thuot book street will clearly be an attractive destination, a connecting point for tourists traveling across Vietnam, "in unison" with other book streets, creating common reading cultural spaces, introducing authors and works together...
Mr. Le Hoang emphasized that if there is a connection, major action programs of the entire book street system can be implemented, at the same time strongly promoting the values of reading culture and community culture, thereby certainly increasing the effectiveness of book street projects many times over.

Ms. Tran Doan Thuy Linh, Director of Buon Ma Thuot Book Street Joint Stock Company, said that the unit is currently implementing periodic activities, coordinating with organizations and businesses in the area to promote more effectively activities to honor reading culture. In particular, cooperation and association with book streets nationwide is really necessary, so that Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Book Street can be truly effective.
