Boldly growing Canh oranges, Mr. Hoang Van Vien in Hoa Binh commune, Chi Lang district, Lang Son province has earned 1 billion VND/year thanks to this specialty tree that produces delicious fruit.
Born in 1988, he has worked many jobs: driving excavators, driving cars, making animal feed, growing persimmons... until 2022, Mr. Vien "fell in love" with the tangerine tree.
After 3 years of planting, by 2024, Mr. Vien had harvested the first crop of 30 tons of oranges, bringing in an income of over 1 billion VND.
Cared for organically, Canh orange trees grow very healthily.
To develop the tangerine tree in Hoa Binh, Mr. Vien went to gardens in Hung Yen and Bac Giang to learn about tangerine trees, techniques, planting methods, care, and seedlings...
After carefully researching the tangerine tree, in 2022, Mr. Vien decided to buy 1,500 tangerine trees from Hung Yen to plant in his family's garden.
Mr. Vien said: From the process of learning from gardeners, I see that in order for the orange tree to grow healthily and ensure the health of the grower, growing it using organic methods is the most sustainable direction and brings the highest economic efficiency.
To help the Canh orange garden grow well, Mr. Vien, Hoa Binh commune, Chi Lang district, Lang Son province, regularly visits the garden to monitor the growth situation as well as pests and diseases.
When I asked Mr. Vien about the solution of not spreading a tarp to cover the ground to prevent weeds like in other gardens, Mr. Vien smiled and said: In organic farming, weeds also have many benefits such as keeping the tangerine trees moist, so there is no need to remove all the weeds in the garden.
Because it is grown using organic methods, when we come to Mr. Vien's orange garden on these March days, we all feel a very fresh air, birds are chirping to catch worms, bees are racing to find nectar, below is the family's flock of chickens looking for food...
The tangerine tree is a difficult crop to grow because of its complicated care techniques. Therefore, in addition to the experience accumulated over the past 3 years, Mr. Vien also regularly exchanges experiences with other garden owners in Hoa Binh commune, Chi Lang district and Bac Giang, Hung Yen provinces... to select and apply good techniques to his family's orange garden.
According to Mr. Vien: Canh orange is a crop that requires a very meticulous care process. The type of fertilizer applied, the dosage, the amount of water, the root ring treatment, etc. all have an immediate impact on the tree and the fruit yield when harvested. Therefore, growers must be truly dedicated, must regularly visit the garden to grasp the situation and have timely solutions.
By taking care of the orange garden according to the right process, in 2024, the initial "sweet fruit" came to Mr. Vien when the orange garden yielded 30 tons, with a selling price of 35,000 - 65,000 VND/kg, Mr. Vien's family earned over 1 billion VND.
With proper care, in 2024, the orange garden brought Mr. Vien's family an income of over 1 billion VND.
Mr. Vien added: 2024 is the first year that the orange tree bears fruit, so the yield is not high yet, but according to the experience of gardeners, from next year the orange tree will be more stable, healthier and yield 1.5-2 times higher.
Realizing that the orange tree brings high economic efficiency, Mr. Vien has now expanded the orange growing area to 2,600 trees.
During the conversation and visit to the tangerine garden with Mr. Vien, we still had to stop occasionally for Mr. Vien to listen to phone calls from households growing tangerine in the area.
Mr. Vien said: Currently, some households in Hoa Binh commune are also growing Canh oranges, so people often contact each other to learn from each other's experiences.
Those who go first and have accumulated some experience should share it with those who grow later. Those who go first should support those who come after, only then can they develop quickly. Hopefully, the tangerine tree will bring prosperity to farmers.
