Recently, Quang Ngai City Police issued an indictment against two bean sprout production facilities in Nghia Chanh Ward, Quang Ngai City for using the chemical 6-Benzylaminopurine to make sprouts. This chemical stimulates plant growth, branching, and budding; enhances flowering and makes fruit larger by stimulating cell division. This chemical is like a miracle drug for plants, increasing resistance to disease, drought, and cold.
Although it is a “miracle drug” that stimulates plant growth, it can cause acute poisoning and harm the health of consumers if consumed. It is worth mentioning that these two establishments were previously administratively fined and had their bean sprout production suspended for two months, but for the sake of profit, the two defendants continued to use chemicals to incubate bean sprouts.
Dr. Vu Thanh Hai - Head of the Department of Vegetables, Fruits and Landscapes, Faculty of Agronomy, Vietnam Academy of Agriculture said that in addition to the chemical 6-Benzylaminopurine, there is another chemical that bean sprout production facilities can use, which is Gibberellins Acid (abbreviated as GA3). This substance can stimulate the elongation of the stem, the growth of stem height, the length of branches and roots.
“Gibberellins acid has the effect of expanding cells longitudinally, for soaked bean sprouts, it will grow faster or germinate faster, evenly, making the growing medium bigger, fatter, more eye-catching, used for some leafy plants to help them grow faster. This substance is often used by many people for some crops in the field. I do not recommend using this substance to incubate bean sprouts” – Dr. Vu Thanh Hai affirmed.
There are many different types of chemicals on the market that bean sprout producers often tell each other to buy to help bean sprouts grow quickly, look beautiful, and last a long time without getting rotten.
Therefore, consumers can recognize clean and safe bean sprouts through the following signs:
- Choose bean sprouts that are about 5-6cm long, with a thin stem, not too big or too fat. However, do not choose bean sprouts with unusually long stems. Only bean sprouts treated with chemicals have the ability to grow exceptionally well thanks to chemicals, with long and large stems. Besides, according to research, the longer the sprouts, the less protein and nutrients they contain.
- Bean sprouts have long roots: Clean and safe bean sprouts take about 3 days (in summer), 5 days in cold season to grow, so the roots are many and long. Bean sprouts soaked in chemicals only have a very short, dark root under the stem.
- Choose bean sprouts with curved, non-shiny stems: Traditional bean sprouts usually do not use chemicals so they do not look nice. Bean sprouts that have been treated with bleaching chemicals will be plump, shiny white and straight.
