TPO - After nearly 3 days of being attacked by ransomware, the information technology system serving customers and the management and operation of Vietnam Post has been restored.
A representative of Vietnam Post said that by 10 p.m. on June 7, the information technology system serving customers and the management and operation of Vietnam Post had been restored, after nearly 3 days of interruption due to a ransomware attack.
Up to now, all activities related to the services have basically operated normally and there have been no signs of financial damage.
In addition, the Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention has coordinated forces to continue collecting and consolidating documents and evidence to serve the investigation and handling of cybercrimes in accordance with the law.
Previously, at 3:10 a.m. the same day, the information technology system of Vietnam Post Corporation was illegally attacked (ransomware - ransomware attack), causing the system to be interrupted, directly affecting the implementation of activities related to postal delivery services.
Upon detecting the incident, Vietnam Post activated an action plan, following the instructions of the Information Security Department (Ministry of Information and Communications), including disconnecting information technology systems to isolate the incident and protect data. As a result, websites (containing “vnpost.vn” in the domain name) and related applications have been interrupted for nearly 3 days.
Vietnam Post is the next enterprise to be attacked by malware in Vietnam recently. Previously in 2023, a number of large enterprises in Vietnam were also attacked by malware causing service disruptions, greatly affecting the operation of the system, causing serious damage.
Ransomware attacks in the world as well as in Vietnam are becoming increasingly complex. In 2023, the world is estimated to lose up to 8,000 billion USD due to cyber attacks (equivalent to nearly 21 billion USD per day). This figure is expected to increase to 9,500 billion USD by 2024. Every 11 seconds, an organization worldwide is attacked by Ransomware. At the same time, more than 353 million people have been affected by data breaches with the average global cost of a data breach reaching 4.45 million USD.
According to experts, thanks to the help of artificial intelligence (AI), cyber attack and attack prevention activities are becoming more and more sophisticated and complex. AI is now used to automatically search for security vulnerabilities, support attack and defense campaigns, and open new fronts in cyber wars. For example, AI is used to control computer networks infected with malware, botnet networks to organize chain attacks, targeting organizations, especially important systems of countries and businesses.
