Many changes in graduation exams
Recently, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) announced the method of organizing the 2025 high school graduation exam. This is the first graduation exam of the biology course according to the 2018 General Education Program.
Accordingly, students must take 4 subjects, of which Math and Literature are compulsory. Regarding the exam format, Literature is an essay test. The remaining subjects are multiple choice. Candidates must take 2 subjects of their choice from the remaining subjects studied in grade 12 (Foreign Language, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, Technology).
Will there be many changes in the way the 2025 high school graduation exam is designed?
The number of college admission combinations may decrease. Thus, compared to the current high school graduation exam, the number of subjects from 2025 will be reduced by 2 subjects. The combined exam of Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and Social Sciences (History, Geography, Civic Education) will no longer exist.
After the Ministry of Education and Training officially announced the exam plan, many opinions agreed because this plan has the advantage of reducing exam pressure for students when they have 2 fewer subjects compared to the current number of subjects; reducing costs for students' families and society when the number of exam sessions is only 3, reducing the number of exam sessions compared to the present.
In addition, many people are worried that learning foreign languages will be neglected. Regarding this issue, Mr. Huynh Thanh Chuong - Director of the Department of Quality Management said that according to the current program, from grade 3 to grade 12, students are allowed to study and take exams in the foreign language of their choice, not just English.
Learning and assessment during the process is the most important foundation for students to improve and enhance their foreign language skills. Mr. Chuong further emphasized that the Ministry of Education and Training also pays great attention to the issue of foreign language training for learners, specifically demonstrated by the fact that foreign language teaching is integrated throughout the university level.
“Currently, according to the six-level foreign language proficiency framework, every student who wants to graduate must have a foreign language certificate at least at level 3/6. Therefore, we cannot look at a high school graduation exam to say that it is affecting the process of teaching and learning foreign languages,” said Mr. Chuong.
Changed a lot but is it new?
In addition to worrying about the quality of teaching and learning foreign languages, the way of asking and the structure of the exam are also things that many students and teachers are very interested in. Because the new general education program does not train in the direction of imparting knowledge but forming capacity. Therefore, the type of questions in the exam is something that many students are interested in at this time.
Nguyen Thi Hien, an 11th grader at Kim Lien High School (Hanoi), said she is anxiously waiting for the Ministry of Education and Training to soon release the sample exam questions. This is the first time the graduation exam is held under the new general education program, so there will definitely be many changes. “My friends and I really hope that the exam questions will have content that is close to the curriculum, ensuring the assessment of the new education program’s capacity. Currently, each school uses different textbooks, so the exam questions will not have the language in the textbooks, so reviewing is also something I am very interested in right now,” Nguyen Thi Hien shared.
University admissions will not cause difficulties for candidates Master Le Phan Quoc - Deputy Head of Training Department, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, commented that university admissions will generally have many changes in admission combinations when new subjects appear in the 2018 General Education Program. Universities will have to develop plans that match the current training context of high school students to be able to recruit candidates suitable for the school and the industry. Sharing the same opinion with Nguyen Thi Hien, many students now expect changes in the way questions are created and asked in the 2025 high school graduation exam. Nguyen Thi Hoai - a student at Phan Dinh Phung High School, Ha Tinh, when sharing with reporters of the Journalist & Public Opinion Newspaper, said: If the multiple-choice test no longer tests knowledge but tests ability, there will certainly be many surprises.
“In recent years, many universities have organized competency assessment exams, and the exam format is different from the way students study at high school, which has caused many surprises for students. Therefore, the expectation is that the new exam format will be closer to students, but it should not be too demanding in terms of testing knowledge and memorization like the current high school graduation exam,” said Nguyen Thi Hoai.
Not only students but also many teachers are waiting for changes in the way questions are asked in the 2025 high school exam. Talking to reporters of the Journalist & Public Opinion Newspaper, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tu Anh (Literature Teacher in Hanoi) shared that she hopes that as the exam format has changed, the content and way questions are asked will also change. "New bottles, new wine. Innovation should not be just superficial" - Ms. Nguyen Thi Tu Anh emphasized.
Regarding this issue, speaking to the press, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Ha - Deputy Director of the Department of Quality Management, Ministry of Education and Training informed that, in parallel with the preparation of the 2025 graduation exam plan, the leaders of the Ministry of Education and Training directed the early research on the structure and format of the test bank. The 2025 high school graduation exam will be developed in a direction to overcome the situation of too large a difference in scores between subjects, especially the subject groups between Social Sciences and Natural Sciences.
“The Ministry will conduct teacher training for all subjects of the 2025 high school graduation exam with 63 provinces and cities and a number of higher education institutions participating, contributing greatly to the high school graduation exam. The training will be conducted online, with more than 3,000 teachers participating. This is the core team that has a good grasp of the program, a good grasp of testing theory, and the question bank will be changed from the grassroots level,” said Mr. Ha.
In principle, according to Mr. Ha, the time to announce the sample questions for the 2025 high school graduation exam will be when students study the 12th grade program. However, this is an important time to guide the teaching and learning of students. Therefore, the leaders of the Ministry of Education and Training decided that immediately after testing the format and structure, they will announce the sample format and structure, simulating the structure of the 2025 exam.
It can be seen that the upcoming exam content will certainly have many innovations, which is causing excitement for students studying the new general education program.
