Education needs to be intensive rather than extensive.

Vietnamese agriculture has made great strides in productivity and quality thanks to the shift from extensive to intensive farming methods.

This is a very valuable lesson for the education sector, in the context of Circular 29 on extra teaching and learning activities officially taking effect.

Circular 29 has been creating much debate in public opinion. Many people believe that if we do not continue to provide paid tutoring in schools, the quality of education will not be guaranteed.

This view is similar to the extensive farming method in agricultural production - having to expand the cultivation area instead of applying science and technology to increase productivity on the same unit of land.

The story of extensive and intensive farming in agriculture suggests a profound lesson for the profession of cultivating people. Only by applying intensive farming - investing in the quality of teaching, improving assessment and encouraging self-learning - can we together truly improve the quality of education in a sustainable way.

Should teach how to learn

Extra teaching and learning have become a habit that has lasted for many years, leading many people to believe that only increasing the time for extra study can ensure the quality of education. In reality, the number of teachers who organize extra classes for their students is very small, and cases of abuse of extra teaching for personal gain are small grains of sand among the total of more than 1 million teachers in Vietnam.

In over 30 years of education, I have witnessed many teachers constantly learning, innovating teaching methods, applying personalized learning to help students progress without paying for extra tutoring after hours. They build learning communities in the classroom, organize support groups, help students understand more deeply through practice and re-explain lessons to their classmates...

The secret to their success lies in their motivation, encouraging students to actively explore knowledge instead of relying on extra classes.

Having to teach extra classes means that teaching in class is not enough! But the question is: Do students not have enough knowledge or do they not have enough motivation to learn and self-study ability? If they lack knowledge, even if teachers teach double the number of hours in class, it will be difficult to fill the gap, because human knowledge is constantly expanding every second, every minute.

Therefore, the most important thing is not how much extra time is spent teaching, but teaching students how to learn. When they master the method of self-study, they will actively explore knowledge not only in the classroom but also in self-study throughout their lives.

Therefore, extra classes should only be for students with poor results or gifted students who need to be nurtured. Teachers should be paid to teach these classes, not asked to teach for free.

The key to intensification in education

One of the main reasons parents turn to tutoring is the pressure to get good grades. Students turn to tutoring because test questions require rote memorization rather than questions that assess thinking ability.

The trick of some unethical teachers is to make the test questions very difficult, impossible to do without extra classes so that students with bad scores will have to apply to their extra classes.

The difference in teaching between Vietnam and other developed countries in the world gives us paradoxical stories about students who study in Vietnam with average math results, but when they go to England, America, and Australia to continue their high school education, they do very well in math.

The Ministry of Education and Training has considered innovation in testing and assessment as the key to successfully implementing the 2018 general education program, helping students learn substantially, develop comprehensively and be ready for integration. That innovation must be clearly demonstrated by each teacher in their teaching process.

The exams for transferring to higher levels, high school graduation exams and university entrance exams need to become "guiding torches", guiding teachers to innovate teaching methods and forms of organizing teaching and assessment, promoting proactive learning instead of rote learning and cramming for exams.

Help your child form the habit of self-study

Parents can help their children develop the habit of self-study by setting appropriate goals. For example, instead of expecting an 8-9 immediately, set a goal of improving from a 4 to a 5.

You don't need to be better than anyone else, what's important is that you're better than you were yesterday. Timely compliments and recognition of even the smallest efforts will be an important motivation to help your child maintain the joy of learning.

Parents should spend more time with their children participating in physical activities, arts, life skills and life values to help them develop comprehensively, appreciate their parents' love and strive to study hard.
