Thanks to his scientific knowledge, Mr. Duong Dinh Tuyen has been able to effectively process fruit trees, sell the fruit at high prices, and bring in revenue of over 1 billion VND/year.

Studying at university and growing durian at the same time

Taking us to visit the durian garden that is bearing fruit early, Tuyen said that he currently has two durian gardens. The 1-hectare durian garden with more than 160 trees is now 8 years old; the other garden is 6,000m2 with 130 trees and is 6 years old. Both gardens have been treated by him to produce off-season fruit, so they always sell for high prices.

Mr. Tuyen said that he was born into a farming family, but witnessed his parents working hard in the fields but having "sometimes good, sometimes bad" rice harvests, so he always cherished the idea of transforming his family's field into an orchard to bring higher productivity and economic efficiency.

A durian tree in the garden about 6 years old produces more than 30 fruits crisscrossing the trunk and branches.

To have enough knowledge to apply to the planting process, Mr. Tuyen enrolled in Soil Science at Can Tho University in 2015. At that time, he studied and accumulated knowledge and started to convert rice fields into durian gardens on an area of 1 hectare with Ri6 varieties and a little Monthong.

In 2018, he continued to plant another durian garden on an area of over 6,000m2. After graduating, he continued to study for a second degree in Plant Science to supplement his knowledge in the field of plants, to care for plants, process flowering and fruiting, and how to fertilize appropriately. After completing his second degree, he studied for a master's degree for 2 more years to gain in-depth knowledge of plants, and feel secure going the long way with durian trees.

"I studied for 8 years to complete 2 majors, studied for a master's degree and just got my degree at the beginning of this year. During my studies, I wanted to simultaneously study and start a business from a durian garden to gain knowledge, experience, and experience to succeed with this model," Tuyen shared.

Create drought, make durian bear fruit out of season

The durian varieties grown by Mr. Tuyen are mainly Ri6, with a few Monthong and Musangking durians. These are high-yielding and delicious varieties, favored by the market.

With more than 8 years of experience growing durian, Mr. Tuyen has researched and successfully applied the treatment of durian trees to flower in the off-season to take advantage of the market gap and sell at a high price.

"I use my land and my knowledge to cultivate effectively and safely, producing the best quality durians for consumers," Tuyen confided. For tropical trees to flower, it is necessary to create a dry environment and treat them with fertilizers and growth inhibitors to make the flowers more concentrated. After about a month of treatment, the flowers will "become confusing", forming flowers and taking care of them.

"Around September, I will process the off-season flowering, fertilize, create buds and cover with plastic to create drought, create some more grooves for faster drainage, and limit root growth. After the tree flowers, fertilize and spray periodically to prevent and treat diseases for the durian tree. If cared for properly, it will be harvested after about 6 months. The fruit quality is still guaranteed, the price is twice as high as planting in the favorable season," Tuyen said.

However, handling the off-season also requires a lot of techniques because when it falls in the rainy season, it will affect the pollination process, rainwater dilutes the concentration of honey in the cotton and plants with poor pollination will not produce seeds.

"I myself have been educated and trained in plants, so I can apply them to better farming, such as choosing which ingredients and active ingredients to use for plants or which techniques are necessary to create the best productivity and quality for my garden," Tuyen shared.

Currently, with an area of 1 hectare, he will harvest about 15 tons/year. He sells durian to the company at 110,000 VND/kg. Thanks to that, he brings in revenue of about over 1 billion VND/year.
