In the late winter-spring rice crop of 2025, people in Long Phu district (Soc Trang) planted over 1,780 hectares, a decrease of more than 4,250 hectares compared to the same period.

Today, March 17, Chairman of Soc Trang Provincial People's Committee Tran Van Lau and relevant departments and branches inspected the actual situation of saltwater intrusion in the winter-spring rice crop in Long Phu district.

During the inspection, Mr. Tran Van Lau highly appreciated and commended the initiative of Long Phu district in advising people to reduce the area for late winter-spring rice crop compared to the same period last year.

At the same time, the locality has many non-structural and structural solutions such as: propagating to people to proactively dredge canals to store fresh water, monitor the environment, proactively take water into the fields, and promptly declare a state of emergency to prevent saltwater intrusion.

"Initial records show that saltwater intrusion has affected winter-spring rice, but there has been no significant damage. Although the yield may not be high during harvest, there will not be total loss like in previous years," Mr. Lau informed.

Mr. Tran Van Lau emphasized that the above results were achieved thanks to the initiative of the government and the people. From now until the end of the season, the fresh water reserves in the canals are still guaranteed to serve production, so the impact of drought and salinity is also limited.

However, we cannot be subjective. The Chairman of the People's Committee of Soc Trang province requested the People's Committee of Long Phu district to regularly update warnings and forecasts about drought and saltwater intrusion to the people.

In addition, the District Department of Agriculture and Environment needs to coordinate with the Irrigation Management Station to review, inspect and promptly reinforce and repair weak culverts, closely monitor water sources, and operate culverts properly.

At the same time, localities need to step up propaganda about the risks in late winter-spring rice production and encourage farmers to change crop and season structure for sustainable production in the following years.

According to the People's Committee of Long Phu district, the saltwater intrusion situation in 2025 is complicated and will come earlier than the same period. The locality has proactively promoted and advised farmers not to produce late winter-spring rice.

To date, only over 1,780 hectares of late winter-spring rice have been sown, down over 4,250 hectares compared to the same period last year. Currently, 62 hectares of rice are in the tillering stage, nearly 1,146 hectares are in the panicle initiation stage, nearly 497 hectares are in the flowering stage, and about 75 hectares are in the ripening stage. Of these, 1.2 hectares of late winter-spring rice have been harvested, with a yield of 6.1 tons/hectare.

At this time, the locality has recorded 66 hectares of rice affected by salinity. Thanks to the active care of the people, the rice has recovered and turned green again, so no damage has been recorded. In addition, due to the influence of the weather, hot sun and strong winds, about 370 hectares of rice in the stage from panicle initiation to flowering have dry leaf tips.

Previously, in the dry season of 2024, Long Phu district (Soc Trang) had about 6,000 hectares of late winter-spring rice outside the plan (areas where it is recommended not to sow due to the effects of drought and salinity), of which up to 1,000 hectares of rice were affected by drought and salinity. Of these 1,000 hectares, about 53 hectares were completely lost.
