In a statement, senior Hamas official Abdul Rahman Shadid said the movement was approaching “these negotiations in a positive and responsible manner,” Reuters news agency reported.

Israel has also sent a team of mediators to Doha to negotiate an extension of the ceasefire in Gaza.

Mr. Shadid expressed his hope that “the current round of negotiations will lead to tangible progress towards the start of the second phase.”

Hoping that US Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff will help “initiate negotiations for the second phase of the ceasefire agreement”, the Hamas official also blamed the Washington administration for its unwavering support for Israel.

The first phase of a 42-day ceasefire in Gaza ended on March 1 without reaching an agreement on the next phases, aimed at ensuring an end to the conflict between Hamas and Israel.

The two sides currently have opposing views on how to implement the Gaza ceasefire agreement. While Hamas wants to immediately begin negotiations on the second phase, Israel has proposed extending the first phase of the agreement until mid-April 2025 and pressuring Hamas to release half of the remaining hostages in exchange for a commitment to negotiate a long-term ceasefire.

Regarding the conflict in Gaza, in a speech at the 41st Armed Forces Cultural Conference in Cairo on March 11, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi stated: "There is no solution except continuing efforts to maintain justice, establish a Palestinian state and reject the displacement of people from their homeland under any pretext."

The Egyptian leader also reaffirmed Cairo's unwavering support for the Palestinian people "in their fight for survival and destiny".

Last week, the North African country hosted an emergency Arab League summit on Palestine, during which Cairo proposed a five-year, three-phase, $53 billion plan for the early reconstruction and rehabilitation of the war-torn Gaza Strip.
