Typhoon Lan moved from the Pacific Ocean and made landfall in the southernmost prefecture of Wakayama, about 400km southwest of Tokyo. Media images showed rivers flowing rapidly and at high risk of overflowing. Many homes and shops were damaged by flooding. Nearly 90,000 households in central and western Japan lost power, while about 210 7-Eleven convenience stores were closed as a safety precaution. In the city of Nara, strong winds brought down scaffolding at a construction site.

The dangerous levels of heavy rain and strong winds have forced several roads to close and dozens of trains to suspend service in the area. Authorities have issued flood and landslide warnings.

It is forecast that in the next 24 hours, the rainfall in the Tokai region (central Japan) will reach about 350mm, nearly 3 times the average annual rainfall in August. Typhoon Lan will maintain winds of 150km/h and move northwest through the western part of Honshu Island, expected to make landfall in the Sea of ​​Japan on the morning of August 16.
