OpenAI has also discussed internally reducing the price of its ChatGPT subscription plan to just a few dollars, instead of the current $20/month. However, it is unclear whether OpenAI has discussed this price reduction plan with Reliance.
Reliance is also looking at selling OpenAI’s AI models to enterprise customers via application programming interfaces (APIs). In addition, the Mukesh Ambani-led conglomerate is also considering hosting and operating OpenAI’s AI models in India, ensuring that domestic customer data remains within the country.
Notably, Reliance has discussed running AI models from OpenAI and Meta on a three-gigawatt data center it plans to build in Jamnagar, Gujarat, which Reliance claims will be the world’s largest.
Reliance Industries is one of India's largest conglomerates, operating in various sectors such as petrochemicals, refining, oil and gas exploration, telecommunications, retail and green energy.
The fact that global tech companies like OpenAI and Meta are looking to India for collaborations underscores the country’s growing importance in the field of artificial intelligence. With a population of over 1.4 billion and a thriving tech industry, India is a potential market for AI platforms.
Reliance Jio, the telecom arm of Reliance Industries, is one of India’s largest carriers and is likely to play a key role in delivering ChatGPT to hundreds of millions of users in the country. If the deal between OpenAI and Reliance goes through, it could be a major step toward making AI more accessible and affordable in the Indian market.
