Despite entering the match against Australia in the third qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup with high confidence, Indonesia was defeated 1-5.
Coach Patrick Kluivert was criticized after the crushing defeat to Australia.
This defeat pushed Indonesia down to 4th place in Group C of the third qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup with 6 points, equal with Bahrain and China but ranked higher thanks to goal difference.
After this defeat, Indonesian newspapers said that coach Patrick Kluivert is at risk of being fired if he continues to fail to get good results against Bahrain in the next match.
Bola newspaper emphasized that 3 points is a mandatory task for the Dutch coach and the Indonesian team in the upcoming match.
Not long ago, the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) suddenly parted ways with coach Shin Tae-yong and appointed Mr. Patrick Kluivert.
But in the very first match under the new coach, the team from the archipelago lost heavily to the "Kangaroos".
However, coach Kluivert said he still believes the players and the whole team will focus on the upcoming match with Bahrain.
“We need to work hard. Bahrain are ahead and we are trying to get the best result. But first, we have to quickly forget today’s defeat.
“Once again, I am pleased with the spirit of the players. When you concede a goal because of an individual error, we need to work hard and that is all we need to do,” said coach Kluivert.
According to the schedule, the match between Indonesia and Bahrain will take place on March 25 at Bung Karno Stadium.
