The woman initially offered two whips (weighing 200g) for 40,000 VND, but then the customer bargained them down to 30,000 VND - Photo cut from clip
On July 1, Hang Bac Ward Police (Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi) said that the unit had imposed an administrative fine, without making a criminal record for the crime of "extortion", on a female street vendor who quoted a price of 200,000 VND/kg of rose apple fruit.
Accordingly, Ms. VTT (42 years old, residing in Hoang Mai district, Hanoi) was fined 150,000 VND for selling goods on the street in urban areas.
According to the representative of Hang Bac Ward Police, the accusation of Ms. T. "ripping off" Western customers is baseless. The incident happened because both parties "agreed to buy and sell".
"The foreign customer agreed, paid 30,000 VND for two eggs and had no objections," he said, adding that there was no basis to determine that the video was staged.
Ms. VTT (street vendor) said she has temporarily stopped selling for many days.
According to Ms. T., the incident happened about 2 weeks ago, at Hoan Kiem Lake walking street. Two customers who were fluent in Vietnamese came to buy goods and wanted to record a video as a souvenir.
Explaining the price, the woman said she imported the fruit from the supermarket, selecting large, high-quality fruits. The import price is around 80,000 - 90,000 VND/kg, sometimes up to 100,000 VND/kg.
She explained that she quoted the price of 200,000 VND/kg "so that customers could bargain". The customer then bought 2 fruits weighing 200g, at the original price of 40,000 VND. But then the final price they had to pay was only 30,000 VND.
Previously, social media circulated a clip of a woman selling fruit in Hanoi quoting a foreign man 200,000 VND for 1kg of rose apples, then weighing 2 fruits and quoting 40,000 VND/200g.
"Is 30,000 VND for two okay? Let's bargain a little," the male tourist asked.
The seller was reluctant but still accepted the money. The customer thanked him, paid and left. The incident is said to have happened on the Hoan Kiem Lake walking street (Hanoi), on the sidewalk of Dinh Tien Hoang street.
The clip was then shared on social media, causing mixed opinions. Some people said that the price was too high for a custard apple. However, many people also questioned the authenticity of the clip because the seller knew the customer was filming the clip but still sold it at that price.
