Prof. Nguyen Tien Thao, Director of the Hanoi National University Examination Center, said that the Hanoi National University's competency assessment test is designed to assess the core competencies required of students according to the General Education Program and is consistent with the standards and trends of competency assessment in the world.

According to Professor Nguyen Tien Thao, the format and questions of the 2025 exam will be adjusted to match the 2018 General Education Program so as not to disrupt teaching and learning at the high school level. There will also be changes in the quality of the questions.

Mr. Thao said that the difficulty of the questions in the exam increases from level 1 to level 3 and is divided according to the following ratio: Level 1: 20%, Level 2: 60%, Level 3: 20%.

The exam structure consists of 3 parts:

Part 1 (Mathematics and Data Processing/Quantitative Thinking) : 75 minutes, 50 questions (including 35 4-choice objective multiple choice questions and 15 fill-in-the-blank questions, not including unscored experimental questions); 50-point scale.

Part 2 (Literature - Language/Qualitative Thinking) : 60 minutes, 50 questions (4-choice objective test) including 25 single questions and 5 question clusters including 1 context with 5 questions, not including unscored test questions); 50-point scale.

Part 3 (candidates choose Science or English) : 60 minutes, 50 questions (4-choice objective test and fill-in answer, not including unscored experimental questions), 50-point scale.

For the Science section, candidates choose 3 out of 5 topics: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography. Each topic has from 16 to 17 questions, including single questions and from 1 to 2 question clusters consisting of 1 context with 3 questions.

In one option, two topics in the same field (natural sciences or social sciences) have 17 questions/1 topic, the remaining topic has 16 questions and is accompanied by 1 unscored test question. The topics Physics, Chemistry, Biology have at least 1 fill-in-the-blank question/1 topic.

The English test will consist of 50 objective multiple choice questions with 4 options, including 35 single questions and 3 groups of questions including 1 context with 5 questions on vocabulary, grammar, expression in written text, reading comprehension, situations...

The English test is designed to serve admission to foreign language training programs.

In general, the knowledge in the exam will be distributed relatively as follows: grade 10 about 10%; grade 11 about 30%; grade 12 about 60%.

The Physics and Biology topics alone may vary by about 5% depending on the program allocation between classes. The English test on knowledge in the 12th grade program is about 45%; the general knowledge and advanced application in the program is about 15%.

Professor Thao added that from 2025, the Hanoi National University's capacity assessment exam will add cluster questions in all test sections and test topics.

Cluster questions include general questions and specific questions that develop and assess candidates' abilities from low to high levels. Cluster questions will exploit rich data sources, assess students' thinking in each field and across fields. These are qualitative changes in building a question bank for competency assessment exams.

The test scores are automatically graded by the Competency Assessment software.

The test results are displayed on the computer screen after the candidate finishes the test or after the prescribed test time has expired. The total score for the entire test is 150 points based on the total number of correct answers of the candidate. Each correct answer is worth 1 point, incorrect answers or no answers are not counted.

The score of the test is the total score of the 3 test sections, in which each test section is worth a maximum of 50 points. The score sheet includes the total score (maximum of 150 points) and 3 component scores: Mathematics and Data Processing (quantitative thinking), Literature - Language (qualitative thinking), Science or English.

Currently, the Hanoi National University Examination Center has developed a plan to organize competency assessment exams from 2025 with 6 exam sessions from March to May and serve 85,000 exams/year.

The schedule of VNU's capacity assessment exams in 2025 is expected to be as follows:

According to the Hanoi National University Examination Center, the competency assessment test implemented from 2025 will have an additional foreign language option, so professional units also proposed to increase the fee to 600,000 VND/test, to properly calculate the full service of the exam.

However, this proposal is still awaiting consideration and approval from the leaders of Hanoi National University. If this proposal is approved, the fee for this exam will increase by VND100,000/exam compared to 2024.
