Secondary schools in Ho Chi Minh City have begun to develop review plans to prepare knowledge for students following the structure of the 10th grade entrance exam of the 2018 General Education Program, which was first applied this year.
According to official information from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year will be held by the department on June 6-7. Candidates who register for grade 10 will usually take the exam in 3 subjects: math, literature (120 minutes/subject), foreign language (90 minutes). Candidates who register for specialized high schools in the city must take the fourth subject (specialized subject) with a time of 150 minutes/subject.
IMPROVING THE ABILITY TO SOLVE PRACTICAL PROBLEMS
Regarding this year's 10th grade entrance exam, Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, said that the literature exam was designed to integrate reading comprehension and writing ability assessment, and the content in the writing section is related to the text in the reading comprehension section.
Mathematics will be presented through the following knowledge streams: geometry and measurement; numbers and algebra; statistics and probability. The exam requirements aim to assess mathematical abilities such as thinking and reasoning, problem solving, and mathematical modeling.
In English, the goal of the entrance exam will be to assess language ability not only based on memorization of grammar and vocabulary but also the ability to understand and apply language knowledge in appropriate contexts, especially real-life situations. Therefore, in the 40 questions of the 2025 exam, there will be 2 new questions on writing appropriate phrases based on the given information. This question tests the ability to read notes in the dictionary to find language information and apply knowledge.

Mr. Quoc also clarified that the ratio of knowledge levels in the exam according to the 2018 program has also been adjusted, reducing the level of recognition and understanding, increasing the rate of application. Specifically, for entrance exams from 2024 onwards, due to the application of the 2006 General Education Program, the level of recognition and understanding will account for 70 - 75% of the knowledge in the exam. From 2025, in the 10th grade exam, the level of recognition and understanding will be reduced to 60% and the rate of questions requiring application will increase to 40%. This adjustment is to assess students' practical application ability according to the orientation of the 2018 program.
From the requirements of the exam, Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc emphasized that teachers need to equip students to know and improve their ability to apply the knowledge they have learned to solve practical problems. Encourage students to increase self-study and creativity, avoiding the situation of rote learning.
COMPILE QUESTION BANK BY SCHOOL GROUP
Ms. Nguyen Doan Trang, Principal of Nguyen Du Secondary School (District 1), said that based on the exam structure and reference questions for the 10th grade exam from 2025 announced by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, teachers of the professional group have compiled questions first to serve the 9th grade students taking the exam this year according to the new program; then continue to complete the school's question bank to best prepare candidates for the next exams.
Not only that, according to Ms. Trang, the principals of secondary schools in District 1 have a plan to build a cluster question bank to diversify and enrich the questions. "Each school will compile questions based on the ability, level, and general level of students, so when gathering schools together, it will help diversify the level, question requirements as well as enrich the form compared to one school," Ms. Trang said.
AI APPLICATION TO GIVE QUESTIONS AND REVIEW FOR STUDENTS
Similarly, at Tran Quoc Toan 1 Secondary School (Thu Duc City), Mr. Nguyen Huu Thanh, Vice Principal of the school, informed that from the 10th grade entrance exam matrix issued by the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City with 3 entrance exam subjects, the school's professional groups have built a matrix specification closely following the Department's instructions right in the exams.
Mr. Thanh emphasized that this year, the school has increased the application of information technology to support review and assessment for grade 9 students. Teachers apply artificial intelligence (AI) in creating assessment questions for students, creating diversity in the test materials as well as providing students with a rich question bank. The materials created by AI are always close to real life with the teacher's commands, helping students have the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have learned to solve practical life problems. The school's digital learning materials are currently very diverse, with about 6,000 documents in all subjects. In addition, there are software such as reading books or test-taking applications for students to practice every day with reference questions or support students with review materials.

PROMOTING ONLINE TEACHING AND LEARNING, ENHANCE SELF-STUDY
When the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training set the time for the 10th grade entrance exam, entering the second semester, Nguyen Van Be Secondary School (Binh Thanh District) developed a teaching and review plan for 9th grade students. In addition to increasing the number of periods in the second session as every year, the new point of the form of support for final year students this school year is that the school has increased weekend tutoring, promoting the application of online teaching on the LMS system in the 3 entrance exam subjects: literature, math, and English.
Specifically, according to Ms. Dinh Thi Kim An, Principal of Nguyen Van Be Secondary School, teachers of 3 subjects for the 10th grade entrance exam have scheduled tutoring for final year students on Saturdays, 2 periods per subject. In the morning, it is literature and math; in the afternoon, it is English. Tutoring will be for students who have not passed and those who have passed, according to their registration. In addition, subject groups will increase the construction of question banks to support students in reviewing, practicing, and improving their abilities.
Ms. LE THI THUY, Principal of Van Don Secondary School (District 4, Ho Chi Minh City)
A member of the Board of Directors of Van Don Secondary School (District 4) said that in the context of some extra classes of teachers temporarily stopping to complete registration procedures according to the regulations of Circular 29, schools need to support senior students more. Ms. Le Thi Thuy, Principal of Van Don Secondary School (District 4), shared that when extra classes of teachers stopped operating, many students and parents of grade 9 students of the school were worried and anxious. To help students and parents stabilize their psychology as well as help them feel secure in studying, practicing, and preparing knowledge for the 10th grade entrance exam, the school has enhanced students' self-study ability in 3 entrance exam subjects in the review and teaching plan. Specifically, Ms. Thuy said: "The school's subject groups will utilize the LMS learning system to help students self-study, consolidate and improve their knowledge through a system of questions for each topic, closely following the reference exam structure of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City".
At the same time, Ms. Thuy emphasized: "The most important thing is that each student must determine their own abilities in each subject and develop a suitable study, review, and self-study plan. Students and parents also need to change their mindset of relying too much on extra classes, but must practice self-study ability, closely follow the instructions of subject teachers to review, and learn to the point where they are sure."
At Tran Quoc Toan 1 Secondary School (Thu Duc City), Mr. Nguyen Huu Thanh, Vice Principal of the school, informed that the school has developed and implemented a tutoring plan for grade 9 students. Based on the review of students' abilities from test results, the school has made a list of students who need tutoring to study on Saturday mornings, 2-4 periods per week. Students with good abilities are also supported to improve and expand their studies on weekends.
