T LOSE IN PERFORMANCE
Of course, results are only one aspect of football, but it is an important one. The recent 0-3 loss to Bournemouth was Amorim's 6th Premier League match. And MU's points in the last 6 matches are lower than coach Erik Ten Hag's points in the last 6 Premier League matches, before he was sacked by MU.
Luckily for United, they met Manchester City at a time when Pep Guardiola's men were in a slump, and Amorim still had a memorable victory in the Manchester derby. But the reality is: even when they had successfully wound themselves up, United still could not take advantage of that mental boost to improve their performance. United were still only in 13th place in the rankings at Christmas. They were eliminated from the English League Cup.
Back at Sporting, Amorim had not known defeat at home for 18 months. Now, he has lost two consecutive home games, against Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth. With such a poor start, Amorim is officially disillusioned: there are no miracles for him in the fierce battle of the Premier League.
If he fails to make a splash quickly with good results, Amorim's next job will be very difficult, because he will not quickly win the trust of the executives. The decision to drop Marcus Rashford, for example: there will be pressure from Jim Ratcliffe. The audience may turn their backs on Amorim. He also cannot easily put pressure on the executives in the upcoming transfer window.
WEAK GOODS
Coach Amorim's principle is to always apply a formation with 3 defenders. At one time or another, there are still central defenders who shine in the MU defense. But the important thing that determines the solidity of a defense with 3 defenders does not lie in the defenders themselves, but in the pair of defenders/wingers. Almost no MU full-backs meet the very specific requirements of the 3-4-3 formation. This makes MU reveal a quite obvious weakness in the early stages under Amorim's command: weak defense.
Defense is always an important foundation for any style of play. This is especially important for teams that have just changed coaches, and (of course) changed their overall style of play. In fact, MU's finishing has not improved at all in the current period. But that is not the decisive weakness.
Schematically, Amorim currently lacks a suitable defender/winger to deploy a 3-4-3. Tactically, MU has almost no countermeasures when it comes to defending set pieces. They keep losing because of corner kicks. In just 6 matches, Amorim's MU has conceded 7 goals from set pieces. Before the ball rolls, MU often spends part of the warm-up time practicing defending set pieces (the whole team stands in the 16.50m area and practices defending high balls), but to no avail!
The story could be different if MU can buy players suitable for coach Amorim's playing style (especially defenders/wingers) in the coming January. But in principle, Amorim is only a head coach, not entitled to choose players like a manager. Above Amorim, there are 5-6 people involved in the transfer process. The team management and organization does not seem to be very promising for Amorim to be able to confidently develop his ability.
