Supporting the national team to continue their passion
Having cried many times in frustration after injuries during training and competition, former player and former coach of Vietnam women's football Do Thi Ngoc Cham decided to leave her career in shorts and jersey in 2012. Three ligament injuries were three missed appointments with her dream and passion for football.
"The most regrettable thing for athletes when they get injured is not being able to continue competing, not being able to maintain their passion. Meanwhile, the conditions to go abroad for injury treatment are very difficult because the cost is too high," the owner of the "Golden Ball 2008" confided.
After many years of hesitation, in 2022, Ms. Cham placed her trust in Vinmec for cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery and meniscus suture in her right knee. Currently, the female coach can continue her passion for playing football, while at the same time sowing the seeds of talent at the community football academy she founded.
Similar to her senior Ngoc Cham, national female player Chuong Thi Kieu also had to undergo surgery on both legs at the same time at the hospital. Fortunately, the rapid recovery process here helped Kieu return in time to lead the defense in the first match between Vietnam and the US at the 2023 World Cup, adding "steel" to help Vietnamese women's football once again make its name in history.
Prof. Dr. Tran Trung Dung - Director of the Orthopedic Trauma and Sports Medicine Center - Vinmec Times City, which directly treats female players, confided: "From the stories of injuries leading to retirement of players, with the concern of how Vietnamese sports medicine can accompany and support the country's sports industry to promote the highest efficiency, we realize that there is a huge gap that needs to be filled soon so that Vietnamese sports can develop even better.
These things have motivated us to invest, research and increase public awareness of the contribution of medicine to sports, and at the same time inspire other medical units."
Ngoc Cham and Chuong Thi Kieu are just two of many high-level athletes who have been successfully treated by Vinmec Times City Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center. Since 2022, the center has signed a medical support contract for all national teams under the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF).
Through the program, the center has treated a series of national players to return to top competition; provided non-surgical treatment for nearly 50 athletes of the national men's/women's football teams; conducted health checks according to FIFA standards for athletes of the national women's team before participating in the 2023 Women's World Cup...
At the same time, the center also organized a sports medicine knowledge training course in 2023 for medical staff of professional clubs, women's football, and futsal to provide knowledge on injury prevention and treatment for players.
"With the companionship and tireless efforts, recently, the Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center, Vinmec Times City International General Hospital has been officially recognized as an excellent Sports Medicine Center according to the standards of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) - the highest standard system for medical facilities and hospitals providing optimal health care services for Asian football players", the representative of this unit emphasized.
According to Mr. Tran Quoc Tuan, President of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), this is a very meaningful event for Vietnamese football in particular and national sports in general.
"With the high intensity of competition and our current development, if there are no effective measures to prevent and treat injuries, it will not only affect the health and performance of athletes but also impact the overall performance of the country," said Mr. Tuan.
Trusted address for professional and grassroots sports community
According to information from AFC, in this year's selection round, only representatives from Vietnam and Japan passed all rounds of assessment and fully met AFC standards.
In Vietnam, Vinmec is the largest private healthcare system oriented towards academic medicine, owning a system of 7 modern hospitals across the country.
Notably, this is also the pioneer unit with a Motion Analysis Lab invested with 50 billion VND with a system of modern, leading equipment, helping sports players to check and provide detailed and accurate parameters to detect abnormalities in mobility; assess risks; consider returning to sports after surgery; measure the effectiveness of the training process...
Not only investing heavily in infrastructure, the hospital is also a pioneer in developing and applying the most advanced technologies and techniques in trauma treatment and sports medicine, such as using "anatomical mapping" for arthroscopic surgery to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament.
According to experts, the AFC's certification for the Vietnamese representative also demonstrates the hospital's commitment to providing top-notch medical care to the country's football players, ensuring that the players receive care according to the AFC's highest standards.
Dr. Dato' Gurcharan Singh, Chairman of the Medical Council of the Asian Football Confederation - AFC, said that the cooperation between the Vietnam Football Federation and Vinmec is very important and is a step in the right direction.
"When we visited this centre, we saw clearly that all the criteria set by the AFC were met, to ensure that every Vietnamese football player has the right to professional medical care," said Dr. Dato' Gurcharan Singh at the certification announcement ceremony.
