On the afternoon of December 29, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development held a press conference on the results of work in 2023 and tasks and solutions for 2024.

Sharing about the results achieved in 2023, Mr. Nguyen Van Viet - Director of the Planning Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) - said that in the context of many difficulties and challenges, especially in the export market of forestry and fishery products, the total added value (GDP) of the industry increased sharply, estimated at 3.83%. This is the highest growth rate in the past 10 years.
Agriculture continues to affirm its important position as a pillar of the economy, firmly ensuring food security, major economic balances and contributing to macroeconomic stability.
Rice output reached 43.4 million tons, up 1.7% compared to 2022, fresh meat output of all kinds reached 7.6 million tons, up 3.5%; aquatic product output reached 9.3 million tons, up 2.9%.
Total export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products reached 53.01 billion USD, trade surplus reached a record 12.07 billion USD, up 43.7%, accounting for over 42.5% of the country's trade surplus.
Regarding the 6 export items with turnover of over 3 billion USD, including: vegetables and fruits reached 5.69 billion USD, up 69.2%; rice 4.78 billion USD, up 38.4%; cashew nuts 3.63 billion USD, up 17.6%; coffee 4.18 billion USD, up 3.1%; shrimp 3.38 billion USD, down 21.7%; wood and wood products 13.37 billion USD, down 16.5%.
"Notably, some export items increased to record highs such as: Vegetables and fruits reached 5.69 billion USD, up 69.2%, rice reached 4.78 billion USD, up 38.4%" , Mr. Nguyen Van Viet emphasized.
The number of OCOP products with 3 stars or more increased steadily over the months and reached 11,000 products, (an increase of 2,189 products compared to 2022). Many activities created favorable conditions to help businesses promote and consume products.
By 2023, about 78% of communes nationwide will meet new rural standards, of which 256 will meet model new rural standards. 270 district-level units will be recognized for completing the task of meeting new rural standards. In 2024, the economy is forecast to continue to face many difficulties and challenges, such as: input material prices for agricultural, forestry and fishery production remain high, diseases on crops and livestock pose a potential risk of outbreak; unusual rains and floods, more severe heat, risk of drought and severe water shortage due to the impact of El Nino...; especially the impact of conflicts and instability in the world.
However, the agriculture and rural development sector still sets development targets. Specifically, the GDP growth rate of the whole sector is 3.0 - 3.5%; in which, the production value growth rate of the crop sector increases by 2.0 - 2.2%; livestock is 4.0 - 5.0%; and aquaculture is 3.7 - 4%.
Total export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products is about 54 - 55 billion USD. The rate of communes meeting new rural standards is 80%. The forest coverage rate remains stable at 42.02%, improving forest quality; the growth rate of forestry production value is 5.0 - 5.5%.
To achieve the set goals, the entire agricultural and rural sector continues to promote restructuring towards developing ecological, modern agriculture and circular economy; especially "Sustainable, transparent and responsible agriculture", strongly shifting from agricultural production thinking to agricultural economic thinking; from single-sector development to multi-sector cooperation and development; promoting multi-value integration in agricultural, forestry and fishery products; shifting from agricultural product supply chains to developing industry chains...
